Gloucester County College Students Sound Off!

Published

Hi folks!

I'm about to enter Nursing 1 at GCC and I thought this would be a pretty opportunity to set up a place to vent and get advise. I'm both excited and nervous about this fall. Maybe it's because every chance the faculty speaks to us, they make it seem we should consider forgetting everything in our lives and just prepare for the most difficult task ever undertaken by man. Not that I think it's not going to be difficult, but common! Anybody else have any thoughts?

Ohh.. and bye the way, Congrats on getting in and God help us!

Thanks DIC HARWOULD!!

You're welcome. . . I'm finished the program now. . . If you have any other questions ask me.

What kind of equipment did you use? I got our packet in the mail recently that tells us about the stuff we need (stethoscope, etc), our scrubs and all that. What kind of stuff do you suggest, or did you use?

You can easily get buy with a Littmann Classic II S.E. or a Littmann Lightweight. You won't need the Cadillac of steths because you won't know exactly what you're auscultating (hearing) in the beginning.

Buy very comfortable shoes. New Balance, Dansko, etc. They cost money, but it's your feet. 12 hour clinicals by the end of the cirriculum add up to pain on your poor feet.

You can buy scrubs from Best Uniforms or online at allheart.com. You will find out about those during Summer orientation.

I suggest a pocket notepad with pen holder for taking report. A watch that you don't mind banging up. Post-It notepads as markers for your Davis Drug Guides for Nurses.

A $30 sphygmomanometer will be just fine for laboratory, geriatric case management clinicals, and mental health clinicals.

Good luck:up:

hmmm. i never received a packet in the mail?? when did you get yours?

I got mine a few weeks ago. It had the orientation stuff in it and all. Did you get anything when you had your meeting with Lucy Burke? Also, it may take a little bit longer for you since you were accepted later. Maybe a case of where they're still waiting for something from you, ie medical forms, etc?

hmmm. yeah maybe. but i handed all my forms in and got everything done early so hopefully something comes soon...

I'm sure you will. They're probably just trying to keep up with everything and everyone, especially with it being the summer. I wouldn't worry too much about it. And if you don't get it, I can always copy it and send it to you, so that you have the information.

What's your schedule like in the fall?

i still don't know. since all the classes were filled i had to sign up for a tba class and put my name on a waiting list and they are supposed to call me and let me know what days i got.. i feel like i know nothing and gcc isn't telling me anything haha i feel left out! do we have orientation??

I hear ya, GCC can sometimes be a pain when it comes to stuff like that. As for orientation, it's July29th from 10-12pm in the Health Sciences building, in room 500. Like I said, if you want me to copy the stuff we got about orientation, just let me know.

if i don't get anything in the mail soon then yes i'll let you know, thanks!!

Buy that Saunder's NCLEX-RN 4th Edition and begin with some questions on your free time before the semester begins.

It will make a world of a difference when you take your first test since nursing tests are not multiple choice rather critical thinking-based.
