Gloucester County College Students Sound Off!

Hi folks!

I'm about to enter Nursing 1 at GCC and I thought this would be a pretty opportunity to set up a place to vent and get advise. I'm both excited and nervous about this fall. Maybe it's because every chance the faculty speaks to us, they make it seem we should consider forgetting everything in our lives and just prepare for the most difficult task ever undertaken by man. Not that I think it's not going to be difficult, but common! Anybody else have any thoughts?

Ohh.. and bye the way, Congrats on getting in and God help us!

Well, I'm getting ready to start my second year this September, and it certainly hasn't proven true. I'd say we may have lost 10% or so; and many of these were the ones who couldn't keep up with the reading and dropped or withdrew. They didn't say that to us at orientation, either. Some of the teachers of first year are fantastic! And most of them are good at what they do. I never noticed any of the instructors being any different than all the other instructors I've had - some awesome, some middling, haven't had a bad one yet - there was certainly enough work to do though. :)

Ha! No they didn't. That would have livened it up a bit though! That's not really true, is it?[/quote']

It was for our class of 130 when we dropped to just 64 graduating and 10 more needing to retake the HESI a third time. Out of those 10, less than a handful passed. We graduated around 66-68 out of 130.

It proved true unfortunately.

This must have been a couple years ago? I was at the pinning ceremony for this year and there were more students than that graduating.

Nope, this was this year. 74 graduates, but only 64 made it past HESI at that point....only about 66 actually "graduated.":)

Guess I should have said, it hasn't proved true "yet" ;)

I'd be interested to know how many of those just couldn't keep up with the reading and/or studying (I mean, for instance, weren't very dedicated to begin with or had no idea what they were getting in for) vs those who failed for other reasons.... oh well, guess we'll never know that ;)

A lot of the people I know who dropped simply couldn't handle the schedule, were always late/disorganized, or just didn't like nursing.

Just out of curiosity, is the Davis's Comprehensive Handbook of Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests with Nursing Implications the book that we need? I'm wondering because I was told by school that they don't have a PDA version & that the book itself is on backorder. I actually found a PDA version (Skyscape.com if anyone's looking) and didn't want to purchase it in case it wasn't the same book we need.

Also, anyone else nervous for next week? ;)

It should be the same, Caityliz. I bought that from Skyscape for my PDA and haven't noticed any differences from the print copy I have.

Great! Thank you!

Here's another quick question, where did everyone get their scrubs from? I'm pretty tiny, and the only ones they had at Best Uniform were pretty big on me.I was thinking of ordering from allheart.com, and found pants that should fit perfectly, but they only come in Indigo - do you guys think that'll be close enough to navy? Also, it doesn't matter how man pockets we have, as long as we have the one on the left chest, right?

I must sound crazy, but I'm starting to get a little nervous and quickly forgetting everything. Luckily I have almost everything, but my scrubs and a my bandage scissors & hemostat.

For the shirt, I think you're only allowed the one pocket on the left chest. I tried to get some two-pocket scrub types and they told me that wasn't allowed at all and they had gotten in trouble for selling that type to GCC students before. For the pants, you can have as many pockets as you like. I don't know if your indigo will be the same as Navy, but I ordered some Dickies brand in Navy with five pockets, and they worked fine. I got them from http://www.mynursinguniforms.com.

How's everyone feeling about starting this week? I'm getting a bit nervous, but I'm actually getting excited too. Did everyone finish the reading and assignments yet?

So, I'm also wondering (because I'm crazy, I know!) if anyone got a different colored stethoscope or anything, or just stuck with the basics they had at the bookstore. I was thinking about getting something different, for the hell of it & to have a little fun :)

I'm nervous! But ready. I was just wondering what kind of school supplies to get like binders, notebooks, etc. They touched briefly on this at the orientation but I'm not really sure. I remember hearing something about get two binders but nothing else really. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks
