Give me advanced patho advice!

I start on 5/19 and it's an 8 week course. I'm freaking out after hearing horror stories. I'm in EKU's online NP program.

Our first week covers 14 chapters!! Instructor sent out an email stating we should expect to spend 12 hrs a week in this class. This sounds a lot more than 12 hours a week to me. We have a case study and a quiz every Friday. And a comprehensive final the last week.

Any tips would be great.

That's a heck of an 8 week course, but it can be done. The last three weeks of my 16 week one I just finished up were spent doing nothing... so I guess it can all be crammed in there. We had a case study/discussion board due each week and at least one quiz per week. I would just get your assignments done as soon as they are available, and stay as caught up as possible. That's what I did, and I was able to get done with everything in a timely manner. Good luck to you, and you can do it!

Thanks! I'm concerned with the amount of reading. I've had some professors say don't read the book unless you need further clarification after listening to lecture. I don't know if this class is like that or not.

The class I took had modules you read through, and then if you had more questions, you could read the chapters, so maybe it's like that. My modules pretty much covered everything I needed, so after I figured that out, I didn't use the book much after that.

ella86, I'm in class with you! Hoping the modules are thorough. Each chapter has a summary. I'm skimming over those first 14. Do the Blackboard classes ever become available before the morning of the start date? My other school did.

I've only had blackboard become available the day before class starts so far.

Hopefully the 18th then! I will need all the time I can muster!

It's a lot of information. It really is. My textbook was thicker than my truck tire is wide. I read most of it, but you can't expect to retain it all. I think if you can recall 20% of it two weeks later you're doing exceedingly well. Mostly, that information will become something you may look up later or will help in discussions on medical matters. Don't think you'll leave the course like some Dr. House-lite.

I think my thought process stresses me out. I can't help but to stress over how I'm going to remember all this info if it comes up on boards.

Amen! I'm hoping boards are more application type questions than raw info. I'm stressed too...about starting grad school in general!

I did find a mosby card for pathology. They were great in nursing school, and this time they are freeeee:

Mosby's Pathophysiology Memory Notebook | Nursing | Pinterest

just click the image and its the whole book.

i have been using the class book as a refresher and I also have the old work book from nursing school (same author) which condenses most of the first 14 chapter in to 200 pages instead of the 500....

...addement:

i just looked at FNP board questions examples and compared to theirs I am more than happy to answer questions like this:

1. A patient who has borderline personality disorder experiences intense anxiety when the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner goes on vacation. The most appropriate explanation for this reaction is that the patient:

employs primitive idealization.

employs projective identification.

has failed to develop clear ego boundaries.

has failed to master object constancy.
