Gift for male preceptor

I'm going to be finishing my final clinical rotation next week and wanted to give my preceptor a small gift and a thank you card. Problem is, I have no clue what to get him. Obviously flowery baskets from bath and body works, etc are out because he's a guy. The only thing I can think of is a gift card to McDonalds (he stops by there EVERY morning for a cup of coffee)....it seems so impersonal to me, but would it be okay? He is also in the military and does triathlons.

Also, there is another nurse on the floor who picked me up for a day when my preceptor called in sick. Would it be appropriate for me to get her a small gift and a thank you card? Just a thank you card?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Everyone loves food! How about a basket of cookies or brownies?

My preceptor got me a basket with just random stuff in it that we had talked about from the summer ( gum, sunflower seeds, candy bars, wintergreen mints cause I am addicted to them, etc etc). I really enjoyed it and it showed she was listening to me blabbing on all summer.

I would maybe get him a coffee tumbler and some coffee accessories like biscotti or some flavored creamers. Then if you wish you can add a small gift card to mcdonald's if you wish.

I like a good Star Bucks card but I guess if you know he likes Mc Ds that might be the way to go.

Food is always the best gift to give.

Do you knit? Handmade always gets points from me, even if I hate it.

i think gift cards always a safe bet, especially if it's to a place they like to go. you know he goes to mcdonalds every day...

Not always. I always want to give people food for gifts but many people have specific allergies or diets you may not know about it...allergy to dairy, vegan, on a low-fat diet, stays away from white sugar or flour, celiac, diabetic...IMO it's too risky!

If the guy is known to frequent Mickey D.'s and he's given a gift card so he canmake his own choices, doesn't seem like there's any risk involved at all.

Sorry, you're right! I thought by "food is never a bad thing to give" they meant home-cooked things like cookies or brownies! You're absolutely right about the gift card though; if he likes a certain kind of purchased food then go right ahead and give him that :D
