Ghostly experiences??

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was just wondering if anyone out there has had any "ghostly" experiences as a nurse? I have had several unexplainable things happen during my career but two really come to mind..

I took care of a beautiful little old lady when I was a fairly new nurse in a nursing home. This lady used to sit next to me at the nurses station nearly all night long when I worked nights. I would give her a pile of washcloths to fold which she would do then I would mess them up and she would do it again..we would "chat" and have a cup of tea...she was a darling. She always used to reach over and touch my hair and say "your hair is so pretty". I was charge the night she was dying and I spent quite a lot of time in her room with her keeping her comfortable since her "family" could not "handle" being there.. As I was listening to her lungs she passed. I stood there and of course got all teary..I swear I felt a hand touch my hair and I heard a sort of a woosh by my left ear..

The other was not so pleasant..this woman (also at the nursing home) was a mean and nasty person and she did not have dementia. She would scratch and try to bite and spit her pills all over and swear..I came on shift at 11p and saw her at 1130..I was at the nurses station charting probably an hour later when the CNAs did 12 pm rounds and all of a sudden I hear a loud scream from her room. Myself and the other RN on ran to the room and the woman was dead but she was grasping the side rails and she had a look of utter terror on her face..I still have chills when I think of what she looked like..there was no warning of her death..If there is a grim repaer, she looked like she saw him. The other nurse and I have been best friends since working together there and we still talk about that night..

I was just wondering of anyone else has ever experienced anything like this while nursing...?? Erin

Hi Fran,

I would think that the library would have it, or I know you could find it on amazon.com. It's a short but fascinating read! Louise

Just kinda freaky...

When my son was about 3 years old, my dad, brother and husband had talked planned to go parachuting for my dad's 50th birthday. They didn't tell anyone else in the family about their plans. A few days before their schedule take off, my 3 year old told grandpa that Jesus told him in a dream that grandpa, uncle steve and daddy shouldn't jump out of the airplane because it would be bad. Needless to say, they stayed home and we all went out to dinner instead.

Something like that happened with my son when he was about 3 or 4. My family lives in Dayton, Ohio, and my brother and his wife were going to go to Columbus, Ohio (1 1/2 hour drive) to hear a special preacher at a church service. My brother asked my son (Joey) if he wanted to go, Joey said no because they might get in a car wreck. About 11:30 that night my mom and I got a call that my brother and his wife had a wreck. My brother was changing lanes and clipped another car and his van rolled like 3 1/2 times. They were taken to the hospital, but were fine. Even though they weren't wearing seat belts. The next day all of us went to the jump yard where his van was. When we took a look at the totaled van, Joey's corificeat (he rode frequently with my brother and had an extra seat in his van) was pushed into the window behind the drivers seat window. So...if my son was in the van, he probably would have been either killed or seriously hurt. His head would have broken the window rather than the car seat!

One of my class mates is in her late 40's early 50's. A few years ago her huband suffered an extremely bad and unexpected heart attack. He was comatose for a number of days and was not expected to live.

After the initial heart attack and waking up a few days later from his coma he was in his hospital room siting in a chair in the corner of the room. My classmate was in the room and was standing in front of him. She said he got this kind of distant look on his face and said "(her name) can you see them?" She said "See who" and he replied "all the angels, they are all standing around me, can't you see them next to me". The very next moment he went out cold and had a second heart attack but luckily the doctors and nurses were able to get to him quickly. He went into another coma for an even longer period of time but eventually came out of it and is still doing well today.

I had a similar experience in July 2002. I had caught a cold that wasn't getting better. On the third day, I suddenly had the urge to go ask my daughter if she would care to go to the ER with me. She got ready, and we went. After being placed on the gurney, and hooked up to the monitor (I had raspy breathing sounds) my nurse went to admit another patient. When she returned, there was an empty place where my gurney had been. I was in the trauma room being intubated. I later learned I had pneumonia accompanied by bacteremia, and staph aureus.

i just spent the last few hours reading this post, even though its old, and i just think its fascinating. the closest thing i have to a ghostly experience is actually an experience of my dads. i live with my parents, and my bedroom is directly across the hall from my dads, about 10 feet from my door to his. i would be sound asleep, and all of the sudden i wake up to my dad screaming bloody murder. this scared the crap out of me, because my dad is a really tough guy, not scared of much, like he claims that if anyone ever breaks into our house, he will kill them, and i believe him...so i figure he must have had a nightmare...well, this actually happened a few times in the same few weeks. so i didnt give it too much thought, but then last year i was just sitting around talking to my dad, and we got to the subject of ghosts, and i asked him what made him wake up screaming like that. he said that he feels like someone has placed their hand on his chest, and he doesnt like it. my mom said that she has seen him throwing pillows across the room at the thing. well, that scared the crap out of me, and i slept with my light on all night. he says he has felt like something has kind of been following him his whole life. we also used to have a tv that was in his room that would turn itself on and turn the volume all the way up...even when we moved it to the living room it did that.

well, sorry so long. but if anyone else has any stories, i would love to hear them. :)

Now, this is the thread I was looking for for my husband. Thank goodness someone posted on it and brought it to my attention! LOL!

Awesome thread, thanks for digging it up!

I've seen quite a bit of odd happenings as I am quite sensitive to things like that. Most don't involve ghosts but a few do...

My husband's father died to cancer a few years back. He tells me that when his father had just died in the hospital room, he felt a warm hand on his back, rubbing it to console him. He was so distraught at the moment that he thought it was his uncle, but then he turned back and the rest of the family was far back at the door.

He sees his dad sometimes at the foot of our bed, just looking at him and smiling. He says that he looks down and there's even a little indentation on the bed where his weight would push the covers down.

I have ALWAYS seen ghosts since I was little. But as for hospital stories 3 come to mind, I was in a patients room getting them fresh water and he started laughing so I giggled and said are you laughing at me?? He said no, and pointed to the corner of the room, I looked there was nothing there I could see. I said who do you see there?? He shook his head and said you can't see them they're telling me you can't. So I left him to converse with his guests.

After doing post mortem care we were at the desk waiting for the funeral home to pick up the patient, a couple peopel went down for a break and I sat at the desk. The call bell in that room went off, I answered and said what do you need thinking an aid or nurse went in to do a final once over in the room. No answer. I shut the bell of thinking it was hit by mistake. It went off again. No answer I went in and the woman was laying in bed where we left her, pleasant look on her face with the call bell on top of her hand over it!!!! I KNOW we left the call bell on the floor and we all left at the same time.

We had a really young man die of AIDS. He was in and out of the hospital and finally passed. His room was alone in a hallway that lead to a lounge. After he passed people would say they saw him in the room and walking to the lounge. I was in there one night deep in thought not noticing much around me working with a patient in his old room, I felt someone next to me and asked them to hand me the chux on the chair, I waited..nothing. I turned around and "David" was sitting in the chair watching us.

Also, now that I think about it, one night our patient in rm 355 was doing horrible ready to go any minute for 2 days...the 3rd night a woman in 356 who was going home in the morning said she kept seeing people come in and out of her room and we couldn't figure out what she was talking about. The next morning Mrs. Discharge died and Mrs. Dying went home in a few days...

Here is a recent experience of mine...

I was feeling very out of sorts one day after work. I came home and kept feeling this pull to visit my mother's grave. Although I was very tired and wanted nothing more than to sit home and veg, but I went.

When I got there, it was very windy outside. The first thing that popped into my head was my mother's voice "Julie, put on a sweater, it's too windy to be here without one". This was very typical of her.

Anyway, I stayed for awhile. I was the only one at the cemetary at that time. I started to feel very peaceful. I heard my mother's voice in my head say "Julie, it's time to go home now.. I love you" I remember saying that I wanted to know if she was still around...or if this was just voices in my head.

As I turned my back to leave and took a few steps, I VERY clearly and distincly heard my name being called. It startled me so much that I twirled back around to see who was there. Of course there was nobody. I then though that maybe I was hearing an echo of some kids in the distance (what kids?") It creeped me out- but then I thanked my mom for confirming her presence.

Haven't seen any ghosts.....but when a terminally ill patient is dying in the ICU where I work, the nurses place the pt on their left side and open the window. This is to let their soul fly out. Does anybody else do this or is just superstitious WV nurses?

Did have the bejezzus scared out of me once though. Had a brain dead MVA pt who actually had her skull separated from her spinal column and was still "alive". The docs were shocked becuz this is mostly seen on post-mortem only. Family was gathered at the bedside when the pt raised her arms up simultaneously, wiggled her legs and let out a huge sigh!!! Of course, the poor family thought she was "back" but the other nurse and I knew it was reflexes but it sure was spooky!!
