Getting in shape/Losing weight in pre-nursing/NS support thread

Published

Although, It says for students Everyone is welcome.

A few years ago I lost a significant amount of weight and increased my health by walking/running. I was involved with a support thread on another board. We shared our stats each week, our ups, and our downs. It was so helpful for me to be accountable for my actiions and numbers. Well, I was doing good, but had a surprise pregnancy now he is 2, and I am back where I was and then some.

With the unique considerations that come from fitting excercise and a healthy diet in during NS/and pre- reqs, I thought it might be nice to be able to share and support each other because we know better than anyone else the stress of time management and pressure of keeping our grades up.

I know that NS can be strenuous physically and I want to get in shape or at least a head start for this fall

Would anyone else like to join me?

Count Me In!!!:yeah:

i would love to be a part of your support group.....i just finished an Accelerated BSN program and i literally must have put on another 20 pounds....i have never been in such poor shape, and really need to lose a good 40 pounds...i know nursing is really physical and i hope it's not too late to do something about this mess i got myself into....so please help, and thanx so much for the support

Ok

so we all want to lose weight...now what?

Accountability...exercise...food tracking...motivation

How do we make this work?

I know I have not done good this past semester!!! I will try harder this next semester no more snacking while studying late at night!

A.D.P.I.E.! (sorry- just had to!)

-All I mean is, the wheel has already been invented-

we should ask Nurses we know who are healthy

(emotionally and spiritually, too- that stuff

totally affects food issues) how they stay

healthy, ask what they do,

how they manage their time,

plan meals/snacks, "build activity into their day",

then tailor that info to this board/group...

Seriously, how are support groups (like O.A.) structured, and

could some of that be "built-in" here? Would we like

ground-rules and specific topics to try to

stick to?

My gut is that a lot of people, when they're brain-fried,

late at night, just sit in front of the TV, shut of their

brains and snack- (I sure have) Can we find a way

to do this less? I'd love to teach myself to do something

else, or just go to bed earlier...

I want to join this group too..... I am not over weight but i still dont feel healthy plus i would like to look alittle better too .... i want to lose a little weight before i go in to nursing school in the fall or summer ( i am waiting for my acceptance letter) so i will feel alittle better about myself and feel healthier too... :wink2:

I would love to join you...thank you for starting this thread!!!!

YES! I have just enrolled in a gym, got a personal trainier and am about to start a doctor ordered hydrotherapy class, on top of waiting impatiently for my electric bike to arrive. I plan on commuting to work which should be dead easy I only live 4 miles away> But I am soooo out of shape and in daily pain (hip replacement in the future.) I hope it will help. I'd love to have and give support to others!

Ok...so I started writing down what I eat and "planning" exercise and I have gained 3 lbe...which probably doesn't sound like much...but...It is a trend that I seem to be unable to control...I seem to be on this "weight gain" conveyor belt that I cant stop or reverse...or even slow...This is not how I want my new year to go. I cannot afford weight watchers or Doctor diets and I can't afford a gym membership let alone a personal trainer

Thanks for listening to my rant

Thanks for listening

I went to a trainer about this and she said (for females) unless you're trying to build mass (like a man) you should concentrate on sculpting and shaping. Start with maybe 50 lbs on the leg press and push out - hold for 2 secs, let in (no all the way) hold for 2 secs and repeat for a set of 15. I usually only do one set of everything (except the Abs, that's where all the fluff lives) and you would be surprised how it's helped with the weight loss and I can see stuff getting tighter. :yeah:

Women who want to have muscle definition DO want to build mass. If you're not using enough weight, all you're building is endurance, not "tone/definition" you aren't going to get the sculpted/shaped look you want. (Which is seen by dropping the fat percentage to uncover the muscle mass you've acquired :) ) Women simply don't have the testosterone levels to support muscle growth to put on enough muscle to look "like men". :) So don't be afraid to lift heavy!

There's some great info out at www.bodybuilding.com :)

Yes! I've once thought there should be something like this on all nurses. It's a good thing that you started it. I am using a website to track my weight(sparkpeople.com), but i still have some more pounds to loose. So am joining you. We know more about health so we should be able to do better and get in shape than the novice. Let's do this together.
