Getting in shape/Losing weight in pre-nursing/NS support thread

Published

Although, It says for students Everyone is welcome.

A few years ago I lost a significant amount of weight and increased my health by walking/running. I was involved with a support thread on another board. We shared our stats each week, our ups, and our downs. It was so helpful for me to be accountable for my actiions and numbers. Well, I was doing good, but had a surprise pregnancy now he is 2, and I am back where I was and then some.

With the unique considerations that come from fitting excercise and a healthy diet in during NS/and pre- reqs, I thought it might be nice to be able to share and support each other because we know better than anyone else the stress of time management and pressure of keeping our grades up.

I know that NS can be strenuous physically and I want to get in shape or at least a head start for this fall

Would anyone else like to join me?

Honestly, if anybody needs a Nursing care Plan..I've got one...Impaired skin integrity R/T extraordinary amounts of sedentary activities AEB numb, red butt cheeks secondary to studying all the flippin time!!! I'm going through Excelsior's Nursing program and I take the CPNE in 52 days. I have this tremendous feeling of guilt everytime I think of doing anything but studying...but I feel just as guilty for not working out. But my butt keeps getting bigger and I HAVE TO EXERCISE...but that takes time and that's time I'm not studying...blah, blah, blah. So, I went to the Y today, did an hour and 15 minutes of Yoga. That destressed me almost immediately, except in the final pose where everyone else was falling asleep, I was reciting my mnemonics for my Areas of Care. Anyway, what I'm saying is, if this is still a support group to join, I'm in!!!

Cheers and Happy New Year!

im starting my lvn program in the fall right now im working on my math and anatomy skills so i have a while so i want to get in shape !

Okay, lookit, I dont' know if it matters, but i'm a 46 y.o. guy- just finished an ADN- my dad was in the health club biz for decades. My advice:

-Don't go extreme with anything- go nice & easy: moderation! Extreme and immediate weight loss does not last- Google it! - "slow and steady" works and stays.

-building strength helps u get healthy and lose weight, b/c even @ rest, a person with a higher proportion of muscle has a higher basal metablolic rate: you will burn more calories, even at rest!

- If you are exercising and doing strength training and not "losing weight", don't get discouraged! You may be decreasing body fat AND building muscle at the same time- remember, muscle weighs more than fat, so you may be getting in MUCH better SHAPE without any "improvement" on the scale! Just hang in and stay with it!

-Do not "diet" -slowly try to make small, permanent changes in the way you eat (and so think about) food- changing behavior is hard, it can take time and repeated attempts! If you "slip", who cares? Nothing's "over"- just stay with it!

- Strenghen and take care of your back: learn proper lifting and patient positioning techniques and build leg/hip/torso strength- strenghen your abdominals, do lower back exercises (a move called "good mornings", etc.), do squats and deadlifts- start EASY and progress slowly- pay a trainer, if only for a couple of sessions, to teach you proper technique and form, so you don't get injured! Many nurses live with chronic back pain- do what you can to avoid it. Don't believe me? Ask someone in P/T! (Then post the advice here!)

-Drink water. A good bit! Find out how much! If, like me, you drink a lot of coffee/tea, drink a little more water, b/c coffee/tea are diuretics- need to replace the extra we pee.

-Eat 4-5 small meals a day, esp. a good breakfast with fruit, whole grains & some fat & protein - it'll carry you, energy-wise, especially if you have school in the a.m.! I'm sorry it's so cliche', but breakfast is HUGE. And if you can, get those peeled baby carrots & some trail mix and graze through lecture- not heavy duty, just light snackin', to keep your brain in glucose!

-Try to exercise (even brisk walking) at least 40 min/day, 3/days a week. Who can fit it in? Consider all the time you will "get back" from this: it will help you sleep, it will improve your emotional and spiritual health, will help you think more clearly, and will actually give you more energy- I swear to you, you will get back more than 40 minutes.

Peace.

Yes!!!!!! I would love to be part of your group. I usually only read and print things that I find on allnurses.com so I am not really sure how to check for updates in this specific group. I am an LPN working 40+ hours at the Veteran's Hospital here in Cleveland. I am taking both online and classroom courses working on my RN. I don't eat right, sleep right or get enough exercise. As we all know they say that walking 8 or 12 hrs a day "isn't exersice" .:grn: If that's not considered exercise then I don't know what is. Anyway, I would love the support and will do my best to help you all out as well.

Please let me know if you are going to be starting a seperate blog or whatever it is called and when it will be starting.

Thanks for the invite, I have added you as a friend, I hope you don't mind.

Be back soon.

Thanks Rhalph...those are some great pointers to help get me started on this journey.

Hey, EBibeault- If you're currently working 12's as an LPN, G-d bless you, you've got all the exercise you need. YOUR exercise prescription? 1 massage q week! :)

Peace.

In my last semester of my RN certificate and would love to join in. I need to feel better about my health and how I look. Lost close to 90 lbs 8 years ago and have gained it back through a stressful divorce and my schooling. I plan to pursue my BSN and need energy to work and go to school!!!!

I want to be part of this too. I've really put it on stressing over tests, and sitting around studying all the time. I'm studying for my NCLEX and trying to get a job. I'm concerned about my lower back starting to hurt all the time. I know it will be better once I exercise and lose some weight. What I need is support and accountability. It is the only thing that has ever worked for me. Count me in!

well i am just starting nursing school this spring and need to get in shape... i know i personally find it hard to take the advice of medical professionals that dont look as though they practice what they preach so i have been working on it and lave lost almost 30lbs so far... another 75 to go though... so i would love to join... also i thought i would share a link to a totally free site that has really helped me they have tons of groups and boards and all sorts of trackers for nutrition and fitness. also if you join(which is totally free) they even have a support group for nurses and nursing students... anyway the link is
