Getting in shape/Losing weight in pre-nursing/NS support thread

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Although, It says for students Everyone is welcome.

A few years ago I lost a significant amount of weight and increased my health by walking/running. I was involved with a support thread on another board. We shared our stats each week, our ups, and our downs. It was so helpful for me to be accountable for my actiions and numbers. Well, I was doing good, but had a surprise pregnancy now he is 2, and I am back where I was and then some.

With the unique considerations that come from fitting excercise and a healthy diet in during NS/and pre- reqs, I thought it might be nice to be able to share and support each other because we know better than anyone else the stress of time management and pressure of keeping our grades up.

I know that NS can be strenuous physically and I want to get in shape or at least a head start for this fall

Would anyone else like to join me?

Congratulation on the weight loss so far fuuchan!!

It sounds like you have had done a great job in changing your frame of mind. You realized why you were eating the way you were and now you are ready to put yourself first that is awesome!

For me, even though I have good amount of weight to lose it is more about getting fit. I have been such a couch potato most of my life. my kids and my husband have always been so active. They play a lot of different team sports, and are outside as much as possible. My dh iworks in the recreation dept. of a juvenile correctional facility. So, it's his job to play sports and games with the inmates all day. I feel bad about not joining them when they would play outside because I was too out of shape to enjoy it. The best mother's day I had is when I had lost the weight in 2005 and my kids, dh, and I played wiffle ball. I was carrying my then 2 yr old and running the bases and I felt great! I want to feel that way again.

piglet, my exercise goal is to exercise at least 90 minutes a week. I will start out just walking. Eventually, as I get smaller I will start a walk/run program like C2k5. I want to throw in some pilates/yoga videos. I have one of those huge balls and will incorporate that too.

I'm going to spend the rest of this week just concentrating on exericise. Next week I will begin WW.

Piglet are you doing flex? WW is the only thing that I have found that I don't feel deprived too. I can still go to restaurants and order and not feel like I have to cheat.

If you have not been there Dotties Weight Loss Zone has the points for almost all the major restaurants. I love that site!

Good luck to all of us!!! I'm really excited!:yeah:

Fuuchan....KUDOS GIRL!!! That is fantastic on the weight loss. I am with you not looking to be a Victoria's secret model just fit inside my own body and have the ability to wear shorts....I hate my legs always have. The other thing is I will be 40 in November and things don't bounce back....ie skin, breast, bums....like they did even ten years ago. I am being realistic, which I think is healthier. Any support you want we are here to give it!

Wish, I am doing the points program with WW. I am definitely going to check out the website you listed. It is really nice being able to eat normal foods and not have anything forbidden....which to me feels like you are being punished. Here is a site that's good for recipes particularly crockpot which is good for on the go people: http://www.joycesfinecooking.com/weightwatchers.htm :up:

As far as exercise I started at the beginning of March doing 10 minutes a day for a total of 60-70 minutes a week. I have worked up to at least 30 minutes a day 6-7 days a week so about 180-210 minutes a week. When you put it in minutes it sounds so insane. I usually do a fast walk on the treadmill or when I am at the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays I do the stepper which really kicks my butt. I just really need to get motivated on the weights and toning.....not a fan:down:. I tried a Pilates class which did really work but man I was not a fan of that either ! So motivation in that area would be great!

This is a great idea and I'm definitely in! I had weight loss surgery a little over a year ago and have lost 175 pounds. But I still desperately need to lose another 50 before clinicals would start. The weight loss has slowed down tremendously and it's much harder now. Having had the surgery doesn't mean I don't have to do all the right things. Just a little easier not to feel so ravenous now. So I'm up for all the support I get get!

Welcome Elizabeth! " my fellow ivy tech letter watcher"

My dad had GB a few years ago. He had not done well and gained most of his back. Unlike you he thought it was a cure all and didn't think he had to eat healthy or exericise. He is now at home recovering from a quad bypass in March. He didn't do well and was in the hospital for almost a month. He had Septicemia. His ordeal is a big factor in my inspiration to do something now.

piglet, I will be 40 in April so we are pretty close in age. I know exactly what you mean about not bouncing back like we used to. After my last baby, I was 37, I could tell a huge difference in the way my body looked before my weight loss in 2005 and now. Before, people were always surprised by how much I weighed. Not anymore:(

Thanks for the site for recipes, I need to find some good crock pot recipes! I bought a book that is all crock pot recipes, but none of them were very good.

I am so happy that you have joined me

:clpty:

The other board I was on, we kept track of our losses and goals. We could also keep track of work out minutes. We could then post each week as our group loss and minutes exercised.

Does this sound ok or does someone have a better idea?

Thanks for joining me. I know it will make it eaier for us all to have this support.

This sound wonderful I need to loose a lot of weight. I gained so much during LVN school. I am now working on generals for BSN and so not want to gain another pound. My sister and I decided to do the biggest loser when the couple show started ( we are huge fans), she has succeded but I have not. She lives in a diffrent state so we are not able to work out together but she gives awsome moral support. Tho I love her for all her support it would be nice to have more support from my fellow nurses, it will be awsome to support other as well.

I like your idea of weekly tracking I think it will work. Maybe we can do a mini weekly journal for our weekly post.

Example

Monday 4/01/08

walk 1.5 miles 30 mins

Tuesday 04/02/08

Cardio tape 40mins

Tuesday 04/03/08

walk 2 miles 40 mins

Total for week 110 mins

Sounds good to me.

Wow! I was away from my computer for a day and look what happened?!? How great is this? I'm so happy to have so many people with the same goal - leaner and stronger and healthier by September! Yippee!!

So - if everyone will PM me on Monday, I'll put it all together after I get back from class (mid afternoon) and get it posted on our new thread for the week. This first week just let me know what your weight loss goal is for September 1, and if you are measuring success in pounds, inches, minutes or miles of exercise (or all of them! That's probably what I will do). Then next week we'll have some amazing progress to post!

This is just what I needed - Thanks you guys!

so it seems as if since we are starting monday i am piging out this weekend and not on purpose i can not stay out of the frig.....if monday doesnt come soon i will have even more weight to lose...lol....im ready to start......and i will be at the gym at 630 monday morning...god willing.

I think subconciously (sp) I am doing the same. The bad thing is that I went grocery shopping today and bought good snacks, but guess what that is not what I keep going to look for.
