Getting in shape/Losing weight in pre-nursing/NS support thread

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Although, It says for students Everyone is welcome.

A few years ago I lost a significant amount of weight and increased my health by walking/running. I was involved with a support thread on another board. We shared our stats each week, our ups, and our downs. It was so helpful for me to be accountable for my actiions and numbers. Well, I was doing good, but had a surprise pregnancy now he is 2, and I am back where I was and then some.

With the unique considerations that come from fitting excercise and a healthy diet in during NS/and pre- reqs, I thought it might be nice to be able to share and support each other because we know better than anyone else the stress of time management and pressure of keeping our grades up.

I know that NS can be strenuous physically and I want to get in shape or at least a head start for this fall

Would anyone else like to join me?

Maine,

That is pretty much what I was thinking too.

We could start a new thread each week with the new stats. For those that don't need to lose weight, I'm not one of them LOL, I thought we could do exercise minutes.

If you want to take care of the weight losses Maine that would be fine with me. I have an excel sheet that you could modify to track the losses if you would like. I used it on another board a few years ago.

pm if you'd like it.

Well...my plan is to go back to doing weight watchers, this is what worked for me last time. I did it on my own and lost about 45 lbs. I am also going to start walking that will lead hopefully into running.

I didn't go to the meetings. I just compliled all the info off the the internet and went it alone.

I have a pda program and some excel sheets that figure your points and tracks it weekly, If anyone is interested I would be happy to share.

As far as WW, Dotties Weight Loss Zone is a great site; it has tons of info.

I talked my dh into taking a walk with me last night. We walked about a mile in a half hour. He needs to lose quite a bit of weight, too.

I felt so accomplished when we finished our walk.

Maine, I forgot to say that Monday's seem like a good time to post the losses.

Oh...and on getting our stats to Maine, Do you want them posted by themselves in the thread or do you want us to pm you.

Whatever is easiest, I don't want anyone getting overwhelmed, we all know how hectic our lives already are , we dont want to add to it.

Monday, ugh after a weekend full of cheating. :lol2: I'm ok with it. How about we start with everyone's goal weight by....when did we say? September? Then we're giving a weekly weight loss total, right?

Wow, I'm actually excited to get to the gym tonight. Hurray for the fluffies:heartbeat

I know Fuuchan, I'm getting inspired too!

I would like to lose 30 lbs by September. I certainly have more than that to lose but, I'll say this is my short-term goal:D

I also would like to start out with at least 90 minutes a week of exercise.

I can keep track of the exericise minutes if you all want. Then Maine and I can get together to post both numbers for the week.

You can just post your work out minutes in the thread and I will compile the numbers.

For me, it would be easier to compile the info if everyone would make a separate post with your numbers in the thread, from any conversation. That way it will be easier for me to find.

Does this sound okay?

Ok, I'll say 30lbs too by, now is this Sept 1 or Sept 30? 90 minutes of exercise is doable right now, Lord help me when NS starts up. Can we count clinicals as exercise? :D Actually, you burn calories studying and sitting in class, can we count this too? Ok, I know I'm stretching it, just thought I'd ask. So do we offically start this Monday?

Wish, Maine and Fuuchan,

Just to recap, we can PM Maine with the weight loss goal and weight loss for the weekend on Monday and Wish you want us to send you our minutes for excerise in a thread? We can go from Fluffy to Firm!

Wish,

I am doing WW right now and it is actually working. I weigh in on Saturday mornings. It's looking like this Saturday I should hit 9 pounds total since starting on March 1. I have to say WW is the first diet plan/lifestyle change that I have not felt deprived on. As I said in one of my post the first week I had a sandwich everyday and said, "WOW, this is what bread taste like after all these years."

Recipe swap would be nice too!

:p

So sept. is 6 months away...i would say that my short term goal would be 30 lbs...also...thats completely doable and i would rather go over than under...the sad thing is that i have actually paid for a membership at the gym until may and i havent been in a least a month....but im really goin to start back...i had planned on goin before school which would be at 630 and i find it very hard to make myself....i really have to get motivated...i need to find a pic of the biggest person i can find and put it on the frig....oh yeah my sister in law is getting married in aug and of course she wants me to be a bridesmaid....just another thing to push me to doing this..

You know, once I bought a bikini as motivation....that backfired horrible. I have to say I'm really excited about this guys, thanks for starting this thread. Here's a receipe I found. I've had a variation and it was tasty.

Penne with Caramelized Onions and Radicchio

  • 1 serving: Calories 550; Carbohydrates 104g; Cholesterol 3mg; Fat 6g (Saturated Fat 2g); Sodium 510mg

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 package(s) penne or ziti pasta (16 ounces)
  • Salt
  • 1 head(s) radicchio (8-ounce)
  • 2 teaspoon(s) olive oil
  • 1 jumbo onion (1-pound) thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon(s) balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon(s) coorificely ground black pepper
  • 1 cup(s) frozen peas thawed
  • 1/4 cup(s) crumbled ricotta salata or goat cheese

DIRECTIONS

  • In saucepot, prepare penne as label directs in boiling salted water. Drain penne, reserving 1/4 cup pasta cooking water. Return penne to saucepot.
  • Meanwhile, cut radicchio lengthwise in half. Remove core, then cut crosswise into 1/2-inch slices. Set aside. In nonstick 12-inch skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat until hot. Add onion and cook until browned and soft, about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add vinegar, pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon salt, cook 1 minute longer. Increase heat to medium-high, add radicchio and cook 2 to 3 minutes until wilted.
  • Add onion mixture, peas, and reserved pasta cooking water to penne, toss to mix well. Serve, sprinkled with cheese.

I'm in. I have 72 pounds more to lose. I have already lost 21 lbs. I gained a lot of weight with my last pregnancy. I'm on weight watchers and I am doing taped aeorbics because its hard to get to a gym with my schedule.

If we have the goal for September 1, 2008 then my weight goal is 25 pounds. It's realistic and will put me at the high end of the acceptable BMI scale. I am borderline on Cholesterol being high so I really want to get that moved down as acceptable as well.

Anybody have a fitness goal?

FUUCHAN: Can't wait to try the recipe it looks fantastic!

TULLOSRN: Pick a time of day that is best for you. I can't get motivated to do exercise that early in the morning, so I do it at lunch, but maybe your an evening person. Plus you can start by just walking for 10 minutes and build from there.

Oh boy....if it's 9/1/08 then I change mine to 25 lbs too. As for our old friend BMI, we're not on speaking terms right now and it's going to be a while before we are. As for long terms goals...well I just want to be healthy. I've always been fluffy so I have no silly ideas of having a side job as a Victoria Secrets model but I definatly have to do something. One of the other posters on the original thread (Overweight Nurses) said something about a horrible 224 - I had to laugh. i would kill to be 224. Last August I weighed 323 and finally realized enough was enough. I'd be dead before I was 35. So I've been working hard and cutting down. I realized that because I was just unhappy with personal issues (abusive husband, sick parents) I ate just because...well it was something to do, most of the time I wasn't even hungry. So as of the end of March I reached my first long term goal weight of 265 and I almost did a cartwheel. Long term, like I said I'd be happy at 210. I know that's not ideal but hey, beggers can't be choosers. Anyway, moral of the story. Let's encourage each other and when things seem a little rough, try to remember how far you've come. :twocents::redbeathe
