hi, i wanted to know if I have a BA in business, yet i am going back to school at a community college to become a Nurse (ASN), what type of classes and how long would it take for me to get my ASN to BSN if i already have BA??
I have all the classes, so what type of science would i need to fulfill a BSN?
Thinking of FIU since its a state school it would be cheaper or Broward College, or Barry (private) any suggestions..
Thanks

Hi Those with More Experience Than I and that is about everybody else:
I have looked at different RN to MSN programs, locally and out of state. Some appear to include the traditional BSN courses, such as community health, and even include the BSN on the way to the MSN. Some appear to exclude BSN courses, and focus more on MSN speciality courses.
Question 1: Does this matter in terms of career? Isn't important to have as broad a backgound as possible before you specialize? Question 2: Is there any suibstantive differences in course content between the local BSN programs? For example, I know you have to pass a test in maternal infant child nursing for FIU, but I don't remember that is a focus at FAU. THANK YOU

A1: not at all, once you have your degree-- a BSN, is a BSN where ever you got it. If you go to ... lets say a well known state school, like FIU, you put that in your resume (duh), but if you put a school that not many people have heard of, like lets say chamberlain (not putting that school down, it's just I never heard of it, only from advertisements on here), they will ask you, about the school... "where is that?" etc. Will that matter to the potential employer?? maybe or maybe not.
A2: FAU & FIU are both state schools but they require different things....... but at the end of the day both are the same value BSN. At FIU RN-BSN you take 3 Excelsior exams, if you dont pass those, you have to take the classes with the generic students (I hope that's not me!), but I've heard most people pass them. I was told that those EC exams are to test your knowledge as a nurse.......... doesn't really make sense to me, because I'm a peds surgical nurse, so psych would not be my strong point on expertise... but I chose FIU for the convenience! 3 tests and 30 credits
FAU you will take theory courses, and probably you will have to take pathophysiology, nursing theory- in Nova they used the newman's system model..... FIU you skip that:icon_roll but you still graduate with a BSN just like FIU.
Some states, like Texas-- correct me if I am wrong, I heard this from a friend who moved to texas-- they require history courses to get into their BSN program, such as history of texas. but obviously you still graduate with a BSN.
Thanks, Bumblebee for the concise, but comprehensive summary of BSN schools in South Florida. I agree that FIU sounds like a good deal. Oh I think that is hilarious, if true, that Texas schools require the history of Texas courses. Well thank goodness for Texans. I hear that nursing jobs are more plentiful in Texas.
I am like you in that I too have a BS in Business Admin and am taking classes at the local CC to get my ADN. However, instead of getting ANOTHER bachelors degree, I was told and am planning to get my Masters (ARNP) once I have worked for a few years. I need nursing experience, and if pay is not that big of a deal (ADN pay v. BSN pay) which it isn't to me, then the second bachelors is redundant.Definitely check it out - might not be worth it to get a duplicate bachelors degree given your end goals.

WHAT an ADN is cool if you only want to be a RN. Why on earth would you waste money getting an ADN if you have a BS and your thinking about a masters degree. To me that is going backwards. Yes, there are plenty of state schools with RN-MSN but many of those programs make you take BSN classes before you start the MSN like University of Maryland. You end up with a BSN then a MSN. Which means you just wasted time and money getting an ADN . If your grades are shot or you have kids and can't afford to go full time in the Accelerated BSN programs, ADN would be the route to go.
getting an Accelerated BSN at the university here is 6 TIMES more expensive per credit hour than getting my ADN at the local community college
This is why I am not getting my BSN. I simply cannot afford it (as a policy, we pay cash for everything, so no school loans) And it is my hope (perhaps far-fetched) to have my [distant] future employer eventually pay for me to get my Masters,
I have a Bachelors degree and was accepted to a 1yr Accelerated BSN program, but I was not able to go because I was not able to secure the fund. There is a max that you can borrow for Stafford loans so if you already borrowed close to the max for undergrad you would have to get private loans. I have good credit, but I was not able to get a private loan because it is harder to get due to the current economic situation. My only option would be to do an acclerated MSN( would qualify for more money in Stafford loans), an ADN, or LPN.

Hi, I too have a degree already in a totally seperate field, BS in finance and have taken every science course BC has to offer including org chem I&II, physics I and II, so on and so forth, I applied to BC nursing program ASN and Univ of Miami accelerated nursing program which is a BSN program for 12 months. I just got accepted to the UM program and BC hasn't even looked at my application that I put in on Dec 16, 2009. Although I live 55 miles away from Univ of Miami, I'm going to make that sacrifice after much research and discussion on this website. My end all goal is CRNA. UM is expensive 40K for the 12 month program, fast paced which means no working, really no life and continous studying but I figure that I can make that sacrifice for something I feel holds alot of value in my life. I've had a very colorful life for the last 8 years, partying and worldly traveling its time to devote myself! Being 30+ I now realize that time is not waiting on me any longer . Good luck and many blessing with your decision. Research every angle of each school. Determine your future goals and the time you have to complete your goals and go for your dream....Just my
