I've been working in nursing homes for more than 20 years. The patients are getting sicker but the staffing has remained the same. I ran into a former co-worker who told me at my old building they've taken away both nurse manager positions and have demanded any nurse in the building MUST take at least one shift a week on the cart...including the MDS nurse.

So, reimbursement is tied to the MDSs but they want that nurse to be away from the MDSs for 8 hours a week? No nurse managers? I don't know who they think is going to be able to go all the reports and everything else the managers have been doing. The DON is also expected to take a cart at least one day a week. People are leaving in droves. You can't be an effective DON if 1. You're pushing a cart (they say once a week, but when I was there it was several times a week, and 2. You have no other managers. Yikes.

Wow!!! I guess there are nursing homes even worse than mine!!!

A facility in crisis?

I wonder what the census is as I question if there's some top administrative anticipation of the place closing???

Cutting those positions can poss be last gap endeavors to save money.

I'd bet donuts to dollars (dollars to donuts) that something else is going on. Or about to.

I know, or think I know, a lot more than I feel comfortable posting here. But, a few key players have been walked out and a few others have quit. Rumors float around town that it's for sale, but God alone knows who'd want to buy a sinking ship.

It has been decades since I left an area, yet I noticed that the sinking ships continue, under a new name or three. The same administrators and DONs are around. They just moved around the available sinking ships. I imagine the same quality of care also continues with the same type of employees continuing on in perpetuity. All that changes, I imagine, are the residents. They always had a limited amount of time left on the sinking ships.

It's awful. It's all about money and It's so disheartening.
