Yelled at for posting on AN

Nursing Students General Students

Hi there,

I got called into my nursing instructors office and was admonished for posting online! They looked at my profile info to find out it was me. What do you all think about this? My mistake for posting or invasion of privacy?

Thanks,

Bormio

I dont see anything wrong with it as long as you didn't use any names or anything, I personally don't think that what you do away from school is any of their business...

Thanks haleyanna19. I can't believe they would monitor posts! A bit Big Brother ish to me.

yeah, that's ridiculous. sounds like they have nothing better to do with themselves. My teachers would care less about what some random person posted on an even more random website :) haha

It would depend on what you've been posting :) It's not an invasion of privacy because everything you've posted is on a public forum. People have been fired for FB postings. Be careful what you say online, because anyone can access it.

Persons and entities can put two-and-two together to come up with you. I urge people to be cautious when posting and try to avoid putting too many identifying details out there. Members tend to forget that these forums are read by masses of people from the public.

It might not be that your instructors are monitoring your posts. There are MANY nursing instructors who participate on these boards, not to check up on students, but because they want to network and bounce questions off other nurses, just like you do. The Commuter is absolutely right! It's pretty easy for instructors (or employers or others) to figure out who's saying what when students post their program name and other identifiers on these forums.

It's okay to come here and vent but you might want to make your comments a bit more generalized so you can protect your privacy.

People lose jobs and such all the time for online activities. Our sense of "privacy" on the Internet is false. Post with caution.

Privacy and internet dont belong in the same sentence. Im sure my instructors could track me down fairly quickly if they wanted to.

What did you post and what did your instructors say? These questions are probably academic since answering them would probably get you into more hot water.

Remember that free speech goes both ways. You are free to post your opinions and your instructors are free to call into their office and give you theirs face to face.

I have "tracked down" a number of students here (not intentionally, Just by chance). People who's e-mail addresses are similar to their usernames, people who write the same way they speak, people who give way too much information, etc. (also, people who have put my real name and identifying characteristics about me in their posts ). In turn, I know students have been able to identify me. Since then, I have changed some of the information in my profile, just to be safe. I am also very cautious as to what I say here (as well as on facebook). There is no such thing as privacy on the internet.

Also, it goes without saying that it sounds as if what you posted here was inflammatory in some way :uhoh3:
