I'm curious. What specialty do all my fellow nursing students want to work in?

Me, NICU or labor and delivery.

I'd really like L&D, but I'm pretty well convinced that that will be impossible.

I think I'd like to do critical care nursing something exciting and fast paced.

I want to continue working with the breastfeeding dyad. I've been a volunteer breastfeeding counselor for years. However, L&D is a bit messy for me. Catch the slimey alien and sometimes fight to make it breath. I've delivered one baby and ended up with an exposure that was ignored, so I sat around wondering for 6 months if I had HIV. No one followed protocol when I informed them of the situation. I was new to the field I was in and didn't know to push harder. Lesson learned I suppose. But it turned me off to obstetrics. I'm leaning towards NICU or General Peds. I haven't decided. Right now my job is grooming me for rehab so who knows where I will end up.

On the subject of your exposure...sometimes you have to be really pushy about it. I had a needle stick during a cardiac arrest a few years ago. It was a clean needle full of vasopressin but that needle went through a very bloody glove and stuck deep into my thumb. The pt had esophageal varices and there was blood EVERYWHERE. Her son told me she was HIV+ and had hep c. It was midnight so I talked to the ER charge nurse after transferring care to the nurse. They said oh, no big deal since it was a clean needle. I said wrong, it's a very big deal as I have two kids at home who depend on me. So after I pushed I got the standard post needle stick labwork drawn and had to follow up over the next six months. Everything was fine, but it's nerve racking when you have something like that happen. Glad yours turned out ok too.

Yeah, I finally sucked it up six months and figured that would be the next step anyway and brought it up to my GP. She ran tests right away and thankfully everything came up negative. Not even a blip on the radar, so I felt better. It was a stressful time though, of wondering.

I am thinking ER, ICU, OR, L&D. I def will do Med Surg for a while first after graduation. I want to experience all the fields except psych and peds. My only times in those specific areas will probably be during school.

I thought I would love psych and I did like the course but after the clinical I knew itw as not for me. I don't think I could work psych, its a hard field and I think it takes a special type of person for that. On the other hand I was pretty sure I would like OB and I did love, love my L and D rotation. I know I won't be able to start there but I hope at some point in my nursing career to work L & D.

I don't know yet. I know what I want to do NOW but at graduation that could change. So for now, I will say: OR, PACU, Oncology. I'm NOT interested in L&D, OB, maternity, or Peds whatsoever! Not my cup of tea. :barf01: So, if I end up liking those areas I'll be kicking myself in the booty.

L&D for sure :-) Maybe NICU. Anything except urgent care and the ER. :-/ But I want to work every where to get all around experience.

When I was in nursing school, I dreamed of working either in an ICU or a step-down.

I work in progressive care now and I couldn't be happier :)
