Which Specialty?

Published

I'm curious. What specialty do all my fellow nursing students want to work in?

Me, NICU or labor and delivery.

Specializes in A little of this, a little of that.

Would love L&D! I absolutely loved my rotation in maternal child! Will be starting my psych rotation this semester and I am super excited!

I would love to work in Psych. (I am an LVN student currently, and eventually want to earn an RN) I am particularly interested in addiction medicine, especially natural and holistic approaches to dealing with drug addiction.

Would be interesting to see how many people change their minds after their rotations.

That's my way of thinking..everyone asks what area I'd like to work in, and I say L&D or NICU, but then I usually add that I'm waiting to see where the road takes me. I may hate it (my OB clinical is this fall). I'm also drawn towards geriatics (the other end of the spectrum!). I am also realistic in thinking that I most likely will not end up where I envisioned myself, at least in the beginning. I keep telling my husband that I'll just be happy to find a job as a new grad--I can't be picky.

i changed my mind about 1 billion times while in nursing school. i went in wanting to do peds. my peds rotation was so-so. i liked the kids, but the parents can be irritating at times (understandable, just wasnt my thing), i thought i would hate mother baby, but loved it, thought i would love psych, hated it! i thought i would never ever ever want to work in medsurg, just accepted my first RN job offer on an ortho/medsurg floor! hah.

i would love to work in ICU after a few years though.

Currently, I really want to do L&D, postpartum, or general women's healthcare, and recently I've been getting more interested in HIV/AIDS nursing, and found out you can get a certification for it.

But I start clinical this September, so I'm open to my mind changing...

Specializes in Dementia/ Geriatrics.

It's so hard to pick. Any offer would be great. I just can't do surgery. I've learned alot about dementia in my current job. So maybe neuro or geriatrics. But I always thought Obstetrics.

Trauma nurse or emergency surgery. I'm an adrenalin junky! Granted, I have a few years of experience to gain before I get there.

Specializes in Peds PACU & Peds Psych.

I'd really like to do NICU or PICU, or do L&D and then branch into Midwifery.

I'm staying open until I have done some clinicals and worked as a CNA. All of the nurses I know say that what you think you want to do usually changes.

I have not even started clinicals (this week) and I have already changed my mind. The whole time I was doing pre reqs I swore that the only thing I wanted to do was developmental disabilities. I have 2 children that are on the spectrum and one that was born with one kidney. Developmental disabilities is close to my heart and I will always advocate for it. However, while I was doing some searching around and just reading things on the internet, I decided that I just want to be a nurse working with individuals in an underserved area. I already talked it over with my husband and after we have both graduated (he is a semester behind me with his degree), we will move where ever that may take us. I want to help those that really need it, and this is one way I can :)

This question gets asked a lot and my general answer is always "I don't know.". But I do know that I've always wanted to go into community health, and I'm really, really hoping to find my way there and continue my education as an APN on that arena. If not, I have a host of other possible things I might like. :)
