My favorite clinical things to do is to spend time with the patients. My last instructor told me that I could talk a bird out of its feathers. ......strange comparison, but it was nice. (I think) I really thought that starting foleys and giving IVP meds would be fun, but now that I have done all that I realize that just talking or holding the hand of a patient is the part that I like best. I have passed every validation lab on the first try, but nothing is taught about how to make a post op 'want' to get up the first time, or a 30 yo diabetic want to eat better. This is the challenge and the part I enjoy the most.

There are a whole lot of things that I enjoy doing in clinical. I learned how to start IV's this year, and will never turn down an opportunity to at least try to start one. That is a skill I want to be good at, soooo practice makes perfect. I also like to do the assessments. I still get a kick out of finding the pedal pulses. I used to have the hardest time to find anything but the radial, and now I can find a whole lot more. I like putting two and two together as to the patient's diagnosis, figuring out labs (though I struggle), and the assessments. I also love working in OB and working with the lactating moms. Breastfeeding is something I did successfully with lots of trial and error and research, and it is something I like to help others succeed at. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :)
My favorite thing to do at clinical is to really get into the patients chart and start to correlate the s/s I see in the patient with the labs and meds and drs. orders in the chart. I guess it validates that I can actually do this and come to intelligent conclusions upon assessment! :chuckle
i like patient teaching the most thus far and this keeps me abreast of things i did not know or more of things i knew little about.
i like our pre and post conferences. it gives you a chance to think critically when the instructor is asking question.
i am glad i am with this instructor because she makes you want to go find the "answer".
