What inspired you to be a nurse??

Just doing a little research on what inspires someone to want to become a nurse. Any stories from you all would be appreciated. My father had a heart attack when I was 10 and remembers a nurse to this day that was extra special & inspired him to live a healthier lifestyle and get home to his family quickly. His recommended 6 week stay by the docs at the hospital turned into 3. I was too young to visit him at the hospital. He swears to this day that he recovered so fast because of her going above and beyond. She taught him how to eat properly, got him on an exercise regimen, and believed in him. Sometimes that's all we need to gain courage to put our thoughts into action. I've wanted to be a nurse ever since. I'm just now getting the kahonas to go back to school after being out for 11 years. My boss said she'd pay me double to do the same job if I got an RN. :) And then made my hours flexible so I could work and go to school at the same time.

I don't remember a certain event that made me want to be a nurse. I do remember, though, when I was about 3 or 4, lining up all of my dolls on a bed, bandaging them, giving them shots, and watching over all of them. I babysat a lot as a teenager, then became a CNA, then an RN! I think it was just meant to be!:) :) :)

What made me want to be a nurse.... well at the at of 19 my best friend was diagnosed with a rare form of lukemia..... he was 21... anyways i watched him go through chemo and all that stuff.... after 14 short weeks of fighting cancer he lost his life.... being there when he died was the hardest thing i had ever done.... but I knew that he would want me to continue on and do something to help those that are illl...... so here i am.... after fighting a few health issues myself (ovarian cysts... endometriosis....) i have finally gotten on board to become a nurse.... and to make a difference this is my way of rememebering him daily!

Went to Ecuador on a medical mission with my mom who is also an RN. I was a "lay person" as a part of a team consisting orthopedic surgeons and nurses. Before the trip I wasn't completely sure of going down the RN path. After seeing how a nurse can affect pts and their families in so many different ways.. I made my decision and here I am today!

an angel came to my window at night, opened it up, and said, i want you to become a nurse!

i was like, "i dont know, dude"

the angel then showed me the future i can have as a nurse.

i was like, wow, that sounds cool, then the angel said to me, wanna go catch a movie? i said, yeah, okay.

but seriously, nursing is just path i am taking, not sure if this is for me or not, whether i'll like it or not. its always automatically nice to help people, thats a given :uhoh3: and i dont think about that part. rather i want to have a job that is marketable, high in demand, and with great pay, with many career choices i can go into.

I never wanted to be anything else. At least 1 teacher discouraged me, she felt I was "too smart" (this was in 1959, very unusual). But she didn't dissuade me. I'm still happy w/the decision.

I'm not really sure what inspired me. I do however remember when I was a little girl, my favorite toy was my doctor's kit and I was all the time playing doctor (or maybe I should say "nurse") on my stuffed animals and pets (I know, poor things, lol). I also remember as I got a little bit older my mom had all kinds of medical books and home rememdy books and I was all the time looking through them and reading them. They were just fascinating to me. Then I would try to diagnose and take care of anyone in my family that got sick thinking I was some kind of expert, lol. I think it's just destiny. I love to take care of people and help them in any way I can. It just makes me feel like a better person when I'm helping someone else. I can't wait to be a nurse. I know this next two years will be hectic but well worth it!

my grandmother died of lung cancer when i was young-and we were inseparable, she was in fact my best friend and i still can't talk about her without getting teary.

i then worked on a cancer floor for 8 years...just a little more direction from above on where to go...the patients and families were amazing, too many stories to share but the patients gave me a sense of purpose and fufillment. :nurse:

Being pregnant w/my first child made me fascinated with the human body and what it is capable of (especially a woman). My decision was cemented during labor. I had a nurse who to this day I think of when I just want to give up. She was at my side and was such a calming presence. I decided that I wanted to have the opportunity to touch someone like that.

Just before I started in August, my brother (45) had an MI and then quadruple bypass surgery. Seein him and the excellent care he received has made me start thinking of cardiac nursing... (not to mention all the technology-I loved seeing it all at work).
