I am wanting to go to LVN school, and I'm going to start my pre-reqs this semester. But, today my dog got sick on the floor and I almost tossed my cookies . I starting wondering if I really should go to school to become a nurse. I don't normally have a weak stomach or anything, I can stand the sight of blood and many other disgusting things, but for some reason :barf01: just really gets to me. Does anyone else have this problem....or is it just me?? I really want to go to nursing school....but now i'm scared my stomach can't take it....help!!!
Nothing eles much has ever bothered me but hearing the sound of suction was so bad that my first attempt in clinicals I actually vomited on my patient mid suction.
OH, my, you must have been popular with your instructor(s) after that!! :imbar So sorry to hear this....I would have been mortified!!
I'm not a nurse yet....or in nursing school, but I can tell you from having kids that things like vomit and poop get easier to deal with after a while. I still don't like to clean up either, but it doesn't make me gag as much anymore. I always hold my breath (atleast not breath out of my nose) and try not to think about what I am cleaning up.
Now dog vomit is the worse....I rather clean human vomit anyday. :barf01:
Hello,
I should not even post this but we are all professionals. Have you ever had to clean a homeless person? It is sad to see, the alcohol smell, BO, urine, feces, just doesn't wash out. You try everything, breathing through your mouth, putting on a mask, its like you can taste the smell. Then you start to gag wearing the mask. I need a smiley with a mask here
I can handle the others, but this gets to me.
Dabuggy

Ditto that. And, I got scabies twice doing this, too!
I am with you completely on the toenails. I hate feet all together, but you put some gross fungi looking toenails in front of me, and its all over. There better be a bucket sitting somewhere close cause I'm going to need it. I also start gagging when I hear, see, or smell someone throw up. No biggie, I guess. I just try to think of something completely different in my head. Doesn't always work, but it doesn't hurt either. I think we all have our "set backs". :imbar
My husbands Aunt has been a Trauma ER nurse for over 10 years.... She has seen it all!!
But on Easter... I had horrible cramps (rode via ambulance to the hospital) ... but before they took me.. I upchucked my Easter dinner in my Mother-In-Laws bathtub! My husbands aunt was in there with me trying to assess what was wrong with me and she started wretching right along with me.. haha... Even the EMT had to shut the door to the bathroom when they got there because the smell was so bad... I was a bit embarrassed by their reactions, but it was pretty bad...
It doesn't bother me too much... I just can't stand the thought of operating on the eye balls.... If I have to sit through that one, I think I'll faint...
I've been watching the health channel just to see if I can take the gore. I made it through the "Shrinking Woman" operation where they removed five feet of skin from around her torso, so I think I'll be alright. I'm sure being there "live and in person" with the smells, and all, will be a lot different than just watching on t.v..
I've never been bothered by vomitting much, but dog vomit is really yucky. Especially, if you have a dog that eats poop! Ok. Sorry, if that made you gag... it took me a couple years to get used to it!

I think this is a normal response. A good whiff of barf and I get sick too. That's one reason why I NEVER go to work on a full stomach. Anyway, I find it hard to be running around at work after eating a big meal. I also don't eat very much during a lunch break, if I take one. If you don't have any ammunition you don't have anything to barf up. Most of the time a patient only barfs once and the docs get an N/G tube down to suck out whatever is left and make the patient NPO (nothing by mouth) and that ends the barfing.
