Today I was in the right place at the right time, and got to do a straight cath on a female. I am thrilled to report that I got a nice return on my first try, and obviously found the meatus correctly. Of course, this did NOT look like the stretched out dummy at school (thank God for the patient's sake!). Nothing like the rush of your first urine through the tube...
Hey, all I have done up to now was code browns and sheet change patrol. I am the shower queen, and the bed bath pro. I got to do a REAL procedure finally!
Yeah, yeah, I know, I will get over it soon enough...
Oh yeah, rolled out my first narc from the pyxis today too. My patient had PAIN.... but it was PO so just another pill. Still haven't got to do my first SHOT yet on anyone other than myself or a student.

Isn't that such a rush?!? I just love it when I get to do something new or figure out something on my own.
Glad you got to have a fun day!

Congrats!!! I'm still waiting for that first shot too! I did D/C a cath & an IV last week. That was cool! Who knows what excitement the next clinical day will bring! :)

Hey Val, you are ahead of me in the cath game and I am further along in my program! I have cathed a male (just remember firm, not soft, touch) but have yet to do a female. I did have that rush and then the letdown from an adrenaline rush from doing my cath. Hope you get to do an injection soon. They are FUN to do (except on the kiddies).

I haven't done a male cath yet, but I think it might be easier finding my target
Funny thing is, I was in the room with 2 other students when they came and asked if there was a student who had the time and wanted to do it. I looked at the other two, they didn't say anything, so I said I have the time, I'll do it. Heck ya! I was in the middle of charting, but take good notes so why not? It wasn't as if my sleeping patient was gonna need me for anything (did I mention the pain pill I had given him earlier?? :chuckle )
