  1. My GPA took a hit this summer with a Math class that I now know I don't need any longer...long story about being misadvised. I already have a BSed and did well in nursing pre-req's. I am studying for the TEAS like crazy and feel confident about scoring pretty well. How will this affect getting into the program? Did any of you have an awful GPA and still get in...when I mean awful I mean 1.98. Much like others, I got off to a rough start in college...but with age I finished strong in school.
  2. I have two opportunities to become a CNA... I can be trained by the Red Cross for $600 (payment can be made in increments over time). Nice comfy new place with new equipment...friendly instructors. Six week course M-F (7-3). Books included in fee. Clinicals are done at a top notch LTC facility. Instructor says she has been able to guarantee everyone a job...never had one walk away unemployed.by Or I can be trained by an RN at a LTC that is under investigation. The course is free b/c of federal grant money. Books are free. The facility is blah. The RN was honest with me. She said she could not guarantee a placement at their facility or any others. But she could write reccomendations for me in Home Health or Hospice care. She said they hire frequently. She also painted a picture of what her current students were like...and ones from the past. Because it's free she said she gets all walks. The picture was "scarey." For instance, a student was being tested in clinicals. She was asked to do BP/Pulse. She had forgotten her watch so she just made up a number!!?? Didn't even ask to "borrow" one. Instructor had drawer full of them. Oh yeah, I will spare you the story about the women that wore a red thong under her white scrubs every day. Does it matter where you train? Is it documented on your certification?
  3. I am aware that this is a crazy time of year b/c fall is approaching. I called to set up an appt today to speak with an advisor. There is a 3 week wait! My last advisement went horrible. The last two instructors I saw were old to nursing but new to advisement. I received poor advisement. It's frustrating b/c no one can answer my questions. All I hear is either "talk to so-and so" or "go ahead and apply to program and see..." And no one is friendly. Well, I applied to the program for this year. I didn't get accepted. Now no one can tell me why. Except the list was long. And I get a bunch of "it may have been this or that." I already have a BSed. I have a ton of classes under my belt. But a crappy GPA. I need to know what it takes and what I am missing to get into the program. Is it my gpa? Was it luck of the draw? I just want straight answers so that I can do what it takes to get there. Instead of chasing my tail around with the might have beens this when they weren't. kwim? Did you have someone take 30mins to look over your transcripts and tell you your chances? I get "apply, let them go over your transcripts and we'll see." What do you think? Do they post a reason somewhere in file of why you didn't get chosen? Or what req you didn't meet!?
  4. funny you should post this...I had a similiar conversation with my father yesterday. I am interested in becoming a CNA. My dad was speaking to someone that had gotten their CNA last year...she told them the classes were in a bad neighborhood. My dad flipped out! Keep in mind I am 37 yrs old educated woman...but when it comes to your dad...ugh! You just gotta sit there and take it. Respect I suppose. Do what you must do. You know your limits. It sounds like you are pretty aware of your surroundings. If the area that you are in isn't safe you must think of yourself. I would suggest someone else tag along with you. I wouldn't jeapordize my life or anything.
  5. Do you think that I would make a horrible nurse because I cannot draw blood on serious LTC patients? I love caring for them though...but poking, poking and poking to find a good vein...I can't. No more than two sticks from me. My mom says I need to swallow it...and put feelings aside...she did that as LPN. So naturally, she makes me feel like I would make a "horrible" nurse. And I have heard my fellow employees say "and you wanna be a nurse???? and you can't do that?" Do I not understand what it takes to be nurse...or do they not understand?
  6. I work in the lab with predominately black females. And I am from GA where you would think there would be tension...but there's not. I relate to people based on gender sometimes...this is probably a bad thing I guess. I see the shared qualities in gender. "We are just a bunch of chics working in a lab" We cut up and have the best time...and we teach each other, confide in each other...No, I think the most intimidating thing was being "new" for me. The thing that intimidates me even more is my older supervisor. Which I have to approach tomorrow and my nerves itch thinking about it! Older ppl in higher positions make me nervous. I have a younger supervisor and I feel like I could tell her the world! Strange?
