My First Week in Nursing School

Nursing Students General Students

Published

This is kinda long - but I thought some might find it interesting.

Well test the 1st day (I think I established that on a couple of threads).

Class is 8 in one & 27 in mine. ONE GUY:D , bless his heart. People in the class for the most part are real nice. Though I am concerned w/ one lady - she came out of the bathroom stall, was STILL pulling up her pants & did not wash her hands

:stone I would think HYGIENE would teach her that.

Day 2 - did 2 chapters, introduced ourselves.

Day 3 TEST! Cried my eyes out b/c I thought I did bad BUT, made a B!

Day 3 - Got fitted for uniforms. I LIKE THEM. And, I can wear a small :D . Went over hygiene. Watched movie. Addressed the class about taking photo's & that this "nursing school" meant a lot to me & that I was going to keep a scrap book. THEY LOOKED AT ME LIKE I WAS THE GOODY-GOODY FROM GREASE (remeber her, w/ the long ponytail that bounced around & was just too happy). It was like their faces were "HUH" - "why"

Day 5 - "discussed" bedbaths & bed making - tried it, & THAN watch movie on them. AND was told we have a test on how to make beds & bathing on Wed. And we have a test on Tuesday as well.

OK - problems I have encountered. 2 young "chickies" drive me nuts. Woman who didn't wash her hands will NOT practice on me giving shots! The teacher did not "demonstrate" on how to give a bath or make the bed." I am a visual learner & she just paired us up w/ people who were CNA's. WELL, they do it differently in the real world, not what you are going to be tested on. So, I think that this is a potential problem. Classes start too early & there is NO room to park. And doctor put me on a medication called Strattera. Umm - maybe I am like that girl on Grease:o

Everything else is GREAT. Love being in school & not having to work. Love our uniforms & we get to wear a cap. Love our teachers - just wish they would show us first. Hope I graduate.

Hope you enjoyed my week. I did, but I am tired.

I don't know if this book is required for you, but we have to read a book called: "Life Support: Three Nurses on the Front Lines" by Suzanne Gordan. It follows three real-life nurses and shows just how much compassion they have and discusses real issues nurses are faced with. (i.e. lack of respect, low wages, bad hours, layoffs, etc.) It's something my teacher wants us to read before the end of the semester, and in the two chapters I've read so far, I think the message it sends is great. Some people in my class have read it already and said that it's a phenomonal book. I plan on buying copies for other friends starting nursing school in the next few years. It's an easy read, like a story, and I love it so far.

But of course, you'll have to squeeze this in between classes, labs, and reading for your Fundamentals of Nursing class!!!

As for your first week, I think we all had to watch those boring vidios and make beds. But at my school, the College of Nursing is tucked away in the corner of the campus, so there's always parking!!! :chuckle :roll

Congratulations on completing your first week!!!! Sounds like you are enjoying school....don't worry abou the people who looked at you like you were nuts.....create your scrapbook....you'll have memories that will last a lifetime.

Hugs,

Fatima (who can't wait to follow in your foosteps)

You practice giving shots to each other? I didn't think they still allowed that.

Glad to hear you are enjoying first semester. It is exciting, isn't it? Sounds like you're doing well. Size small uniform...I'm jealous!!! :) I just started second semester & it still feels exciting.

I just finished my first week of school too. I felt like my head would explode with all the new information. I do not think I have ever felt more overwhelmed. ( and I have three kids!) I have been reading and studying all weekend. I think I am prepared for week two. I am not as scared or nervous. I is kinda nice to know that I am not the only one going this. I love this web site!

Hi there all. I too have had my first week of classes and was surprised when the instructor told us to pair up for bed baths and bed making and follow the steps in the books.... Is this a routine practice???? I like for someone to demonstrate a skill that i havent done before...what do you all think???

hrrizen, for our lab skills we follow the book and watch videos (on our own time). We also go to 'open lab' to practice. While in the scheduled lab time, the instructors are not allowed to demonstrate any of the skills for us.

They do have a few sessions each week where you can go watch a graduate student demonstrate a select few skills. But for the most part we're on our own.

We gave each other one IM shot.. It was just normal saline... Im glad we did.. Lets you realize the anxiety some people feel when getting a simple shot...

As far as the shots go, I was told that we would have to give shots on eachother.

Today, we had a "skills check off" and I at least passed.

We have a really good bunch of people. It seems like everyone wants everyone else to do well. We really help eachother out. I hope ALL of us make it to the end. Heck, I hope I make it till the end

Glad everyone else is enjoying their first couple of weeks.

250 days left of BSN prog....there are so many hoops to jump thru and timelines it is hard to keep it all straight sometimes...one day at a time, one assignment at a time, and plenty of kleenex....

glad to hear its going well for you! I'm sure it will take some time to adjust!

sounds like you are doing well...keep it up!!
