Dwindling class members?

How many class mates of yours have dropped out so far? We started with 120 in May , we are now down to 93 to date.

Guess I was responding to Luckylady68 and her observation that they'd already lost about half of their members and there was no guarentee any of the remaining members would make it to the end.

You're right. We had some folks in my class who decided nsg. wasn't for them. In view of the fact that there is such competition for seats in most nursing schools, it would be ideal if schools could get a measure of the seriousness of intent and (uh, how to say this...) realism of vision ? of each person they admit. Does the candidate know what they're getting into? So, even when a student doesn't "fail" (just drops out or changes majors), it's a failure for the system because some other candidate is wasting time in elementary ed when they really would have done well in nursing and stuck with it.

I mean no criticism for your school and it sounds like it's top flight. But there really are costs, to the individual and the school and even society at large when we lose so many nurses so early in the game.

Just an observation.

We have 83 in our class that started in August and at least 3 have dropped and looking at maybe 10 failing out first semester. We all know who is not making the grade in lecture and clinicals its just sooooo easy to pick out their assessments aren't done and try to hang an IV drip without a watch. Go figure. This is the biggest class they have had in a long time. 435 applied and 83 made the grade. I'm hanging in there. Grades are there in clinicals lecture is tough but I'm keeping my self up there. I have a % that I WILL DROP below. We've had 4 exams and I know people who have failed all four and have 6 to go and it's only getting harder.

We started out with around 80 members. I think maybe one or 2 dropped out not many. I have a feeling some may fail out but who knows.

Oh wow, one of my classmates has failed ALL of our first 3 tests (and not just by a little! The last one she made in the lower 50's... the lowest grade in the class...) and she is so set that she will be going on. I don't want to say anything, (she's my friend!) but how devistating that will be! We only have 2 more tests and a final, which comprises most of our grade. Right now, I don't think there's any possible way for her to pass unless she makes over 100 on each of the tests... :(

28 out of 31, we are halfway. 1 never showed the first day, 1 quit after the first day and two quit due to various reasons after the first semester.

i am in second semester ..westarted with a full class of 49 but because of hurricane katrina we lost about half...after the storm we only had 27 to return we are now done to about 23.....

We were just doing a count in class today on this very subject. We started out with 48, lost 12 first semester then gained 4 LPN second semester. 10 students were scheduled to leave after second semester to go to a BSN program. 2 people had to drop 2nd semester because they failed the math test.Started this semester out with 25, 24 from last semester, plus one LPN ( didn't see her today I bet she got smart and went to another school). Last week 10 people failed out(8 week class) and then two people joined that had failed out previous semesters. So now there are 16 in the class and 10 left from 1st semester. Pretty sad. Next semester we will grow as the 11 who failed 4th semester this semester join us. Plus our NCLEX pass rate isn't even all that hot. Now I know why its the only school in town w/o a waiting list.

I started PN school on Oct 3. Since then, exactly one month later, we are 7less than the day we started. 2 people quick on there own and the other 5 failed our class and had to leave. I hope this pace slows a little, or there will be very few left. We now have 40 students!!

I replied to this already last semester... we started with 45 and now down to 20 after another semester (we were only down to 40 before)... 3 semesters to go! I wonder how many I'll graduate with?

It's horrible at how many people decide to drop or fail out. I personally think that there should be a volunteer requirement as part of the prereq. for the nursing program. I have talked to so many women that say they are trying to make it in a program and have no idea of the type of work a nurse even does. Many believe that they don't have to do the dirty work because they think they will have an aide.

Most of your other health professions require volunteer work so why not make it a nursing prereq. At least that would help with those that drop because they find out nursing is not what they thought it would be.

I am currently in A and P 2 waiting for my letter at the end of the month. The head of the science department told us they were going to get tougher on people applying to nursing because alot have no idea what nursing is all about. In my class I had people who said they had no idea they were going to have to clean people and their feces up. They tought other people did that. She said some people don't realize you will be taking care of people when they are sick and not at their best. They will be requiring you to pass muscles and bones test with a C, not just passing A and P. I think the observation would also be a good idea. It might help people see what it is all about before they get in.

God Bless,

Mary Ann
