I am going to nursing school and would like to know if nursing students practice on each other. If they practice on each other, what do they perform?

have you read the "being bathed by classmates" thread? they do not do this in my program. i do not start until the fall but i had to know. i emailed the school and asked they to explain how things worked there and they were most helpful. maybe you should email your school. because some of the stuff i have read on here had me ready to hide :chair: but once i got information on how my school does things it was totally different. good luck!:)

In my school, we practice all non-invasive procedures and assessments on each other. For example, we do body assessment exams, transfers, history taking, bed baths (wearing shorts & tank top); basically we do anything that does not require shoving a needle or tube in someone or requires exposure of thier "private areas." :imbar We use mannequiuns for enemas, injections, NG's, etc. until clinicals when we perform these on patients with instructor supervision.

I have heard that at ANC they do IV sticks and pricking fingers... I dunno that for sure... That could just be rumor...

We didn't bathe each other.....any "personal"-type care was performed on the mannequins in skills lab, then on real patients with instructor supervision in clinicals. However, we did do IM and SQ injections on one another (after practicing on oranges), transfers, physical assessments (I was particularly useful for lung assessments because of my asthma :chuckle ), fingersticks, and of course, bed mobility.

At my school we practiced assessments and non-invassive procedures on each other... with one exception; finger sticks. I would have readily signed a waiver to practice IV's, though... I really wish I had had the opportunity to practice that skill. Of course I'd have to chose who my partner would be... in paramedic school they paired me with an automechanic... :stone many hematomas later I begged my instructor to release me from the puncture master and my life has been almost normal ever since... although the mental scars remain... :uhoh21: :)

We did IM and SC injections at the university I attend...my friend at the CC did IV starts, IM and SC injections...they also bathed each other which we did not do. We did BP, HR, pulse, resp. I think that is about it. Each school seems to be a little different.

It really depends on what school you go to. At my school we don't do anything but bandage each other with ace wraps. I know of a few schools that still let their students give saline SC shots to each other and another school (brace yourself) that made their female students (this was a BSN program and it was 9 years ago) give each other pap smears....I swear to God...I'm not joking. :uhoh21:

I would find out ahead of time what a nursing school's lab practices are like.

we do IM & SC's on each other. They say it's so that we don't have to feel like it's our first time on a real pt. For starting IV's, if you want to start one on a classmate, u have to let someone start one on yourself!

It depends on what each individual school has as their standard, and more importantly, what they believe their liability could be in allowing each task.

At my institution, we practice all injections except IM on each other. We also practice peripheral IV catheter placement and blood draws on each other.

Everything else pretty much is on a mannequin.

Yes, all non-invasive procedures we practiced on each others. Things like Foleys, etc. we used the mannequins...so far anyway....don't know about my junior/senior year yet.
