Anyone taking Prereqs with Nursing?

Is anyone taking any prerequisite classes with their nursing classes?

I may be starting the nursing program this fall, but if I do, I will have to take A&PI with the 1st semester of nursing, A&PII with the 2nd semester of nursing and microbiology with the 3rd semester.

Just wondering if anyone else has done or is planning on doing this.

We're not allowed to do that at my school. You have to have all your pre-reqs completed before starting the nursing program.

We have to take our pre-reqs first (thats why they are pre-reqs!)

There are so many applicants and too few spaces, if you dont have them done, you dont get in (and you need to have super high grades too!)

Geez...where are you located? Maybe i'll come there!

Good luck!

I did take some of the requisite classes to graduate during the nursing program, but not the big ones like micro... I did those prior to getting into the program. Some people did do them concurrently. What I advise you to do is ask one of the instructors what semesters are hardest and take these prereq's during the easier semesters. At my school, there were two semesters that were easier than the others. The other two, I didn't even have time to spare.... You could also take the fast courses over the summer or Xmas breaks. They're hell, but so is taking micro during nursing school!

I call my 'other' classes prereqs, but actually at my school they are coreqs...which means you take them either before or with the nursing courses with which they are listed...the staff seriously recommends you do all those classes first and get them out of the way...but I can understand if you want to get done in the least amount of time you might take on a heavier course load...

Anyway (I do ramble on), I did mine first because the nursing classes themselves are like 2-3 classes in one and I wanted to still have hair at the end of the semester. I wish I had some advice for you; this is pretty much a pointless post.

Good luck. :)

Hi NJ,

I go to a local CC that has 4 different centers throughout the county and each is treated as it's own seperate school, ie. you have to apply individually to each nursing program at each center, they each have their own Dean and administration, etc.

Anyway, my lab partner for A&PII last semester goes to a different campus than I do and whereas I have to have all pre-req's completed before I do clinicals, she didn't have to do any of her pre-req's before the nursing program. She was actually taking A&PI with Nursing 101 and A&PII with nursing 102. She also was allowed to test out of a lot of pre-req. classes like Psych and English. She really didn't seem to have much of a problem with it. She got good grades in both A&P and her nursing classes. All be it she worked her buns off to do it.

I on the other not only took my pre-req's. before the nursing classes but I also finished all of my co-req'. classes too. This way I don't have to worry about taking classes like Micro while I'm doing clinicals. I can just concentrate solely on my Nursing classes.

It really depends on what your school will allow, how much you want to take on and how much time you have to spare for studying.

Good Luck with everything,

Col

This summer, I'm taking A&P 2, my last algebra class ever, and chemisty on line. That way, when I start in the Fall, I'll have my nursing 101, and a psycology class. I'm going to take the micro next summer! I also work full time, so needless to say, I don't have too much of a life out side of school, work and my hubby! ;)

Wow! That's a biggie! Luckly for me I have no pre-req' s or co-req's or any liberal arts classes left... (I'm pursuing a BSN). That's due to tons of years of going to school. Good luck!

Actually at my school prereqs are things like algebra, chemistry, and biology. The others are coreqs. I am taking all of my coreqs except Anatomy before I start the program. I tried to take it as well but wasn't able to get a spot in the spring or this summer so I have to take it with the nursing classes. GOOD LUCK! I actually have known several students who had to take everything (coreqs and nursing courses) after they started the actual program and they said it was very hard but doable!

Microbiology is my last co-requisite before I start the program in August and I'm taking it now. When I began school last spring, it was too late to apply for the nursing program, so I spent the year working on coreq's.

When I figured out that it was gonna take me a total of 3 yrs to complete an Associate degree, I decided that I would aim for 2 degrees at once(because in my mind...an Associate degree should only take 2 yrs). I chose Associate in Arts because when I'm done, those classes will count toward my BSN and I won't have to take a years worth of prereq's for that program as well.

So it seems that (at least by my calculations) I'll complete my BSN in 4 years if I keep on track and take all the classes that fit into both the Associate in Arts and ADN programs.

So....even though I won't be taking ADN coreq's along with nursing classes, I 'will' have to take things like English Literature, philosophy, and public speaking so that I can get the 2 for 1 deal I've set up for myself ;)

...Of course if I find it too hard to handle those courses with the nursing.....I will drop them like hot potatoes!!! :) (Gotta keep my eyes on the REAL goal!)

I have to take my prereq's first. They say the nursing program at my school is so intense thats all you can handle.I'll have my AS Degree and all the Prereq's done to start on a BSN.;)

I took some pre reqs with my nursing classes and I would recommend you doing your nursing classes alone! They are hard enough without trying to do other classes with them. I felt it made it so much more difficult to try and master nursing with other classes to do:) Good luck on your classes.
