I'm managing to do this balancing act called "nursing student". I've only let 97% of my social life go on the back burner..making me really appreciate that 3% I do get with my boyfriend/family/friends.

My managerial/owned my own business skills are working for me. Got into an altercation with a classmate during clinical. Was asked by the primary nurse to help with her patients, and that student walked up to me in the middle of the hallway with an attitude on, telling me to stay out of her patients room, and where was my patient, I should go do whatever with them and leave hers alone. My calm response was to tell her that "her patient" wasn't a toy to fight over, and I would continue to help the primary nurse regardless of her feelings on it; I was there to learn & be part of the team. Got a kudos from the charge nurse and a suggestion to apply when I graduated.

I should buy stock in paper companies, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. and Captain Morgan.

Even more impressed with the nurses. Seriously..iron bladders and iron will. How you get it all done in one day..superman has nothing on you!

Everything I've learned in nursing school makes Grey's Anatomy so much more relateable. And funnier. Backwards stethoscopes and weak compression galore.

wannabenny, sounds like you have gotten off to a great start and will make a wonderful nurse.

The only thing I have to put in for this week is that I logged on to Nurses.com and learned that I now have a Minnesota license in addition to my Iowa Multi-state one. Now I can pick up per diem shifts across the border. That border is only 35 miles from me. I want to keep my per diem shifts to an hour radius.

Being pregnant is exhausting. But being pregnant & sick is too much to handle. Especially when your significant other doesn't help you.

I started out with a migraine this weekend that turned into flu-like symptoms. I haven't been getting much sleep, I have epilepsy & I'm off my meds due to the pregnancy.

So last night my body gave out. I don't remember much but what I do remember is my husband trying to break my right hand (apparently I woke him up, stupid me) & then I was alone in the bedroom. He wouldn't bother to take me to the ER because he had work in the morning.

So I lay here & my whole body aches like I exercised too hard. On top of that I'm still exhausted.

It's been a hell of a week. I've been to the ER so much for this migraine I can't shake. It turned out to be due to a UTI. How weird!

Then my husband had to go to the ER because he had a headache & nose bleed all day. He has extremely high blood pressure & isn't controlling it. Now he has medication & will make an appointment to see his doctor.

My son had to go to the ER because he woke up with a painful, full body rash. It turned out to be an allergic reaction.

It's been a rough week. I give major props to all ER nurses. When it was super busy at the ER the nurses never lost their stride.

I learned this week that my hospital has an infection control specialist that uses secret shoppers to spy on nurses and report on their hand washing or sanitizing use. This infection control nurse walks around with a clipboard looking for things to correct. She actually said that if she catches you with nail polish (it's allowed) she might ask you to take it off with nail polish remover in front of her to prove it isn't gel nail polish.

Also so hospital wide, drinks at the nurses station will be banned. Even covered ones. Yikes! I drink a ton and now will have to walk to the break room to take a drink.

There are more crazy rules I learned about today but am not wanting to give away my hospital.

Oh my Lauraingalls, I would be a dehydrated mess if I had to go to the break room for my H2O!!

-It still amazes me the lengths people will go to in an attempt to obtain narcs. While it shouldn't, it really still does.

-PO flagyl is disgusting. I swear that stuff starts to disintegrate before it even gets into your mouth :barf02:

-I love mahi mahi. I am not a fish person by any stretch of the imagination, but that stuff is yummy!

-The new hospitalists we have on night shift rock their job.

-Abscessed teeth suck. Big time. (See note re:flagyl)

-I am really anxious to hear back from the poster about the Pyxis error...I hope they post back with an update.

Patients' families don't understand that once a patient is in the OR, surgery doesn't start immediately. Or take exactly the amount of time the surgeon said it would. Had a patient family the other day panic and ask what was going on- the surgeon told them the surgery would take 2 hours. At 2 hours plus 5 minutes from leaving the preop area, the phone rang..

Guess preop should include education that there is preparation time required in the OR- going to sleep, inserting invasive monitors if needed, positioning, prepping, the list goes on. In fact, in this scenario, with the necessary lines and specialized anesthesia needs, we needed 45 minutes before we were ready to let the surgeon make incision.

1) I'd be asking that person if she was going to pay to get my nails redone. I'd be royally peeved to take nailpolish off just to prove it's not gel if I had paid for a manicure (which I do a couple times a year with friends).

2) I'm horrible about drinking enough as it is, I'd be in bad shape if I couldn't have a drink in the cubby/computer area behind our nurses station!
