Why can't I find a job? :'(

I'm a nursing student and I passed the NCLEX-PN in January. I'm currently going for my RN and will complete it in December if all goes well. Problem?

I'm BROKE and I would like to start working as a nurse since I am now an LPN but I *cannot* find a job. I visit EVERY local hospital's website (about 4-5 hospitals) every day. Yes, every day. I look for new positions for LPNs but in the past 3-4 months I haven't seen any, and if there are some open, I can't work them b/c it will interfere with my schooling.

I also check and put my resume on CareerBuilder.com and Monster.com. I've applied to all of these hospitals regardless of whether or not they have said they have an LPN position open. And I've seen a few nursing homes post on careerbuilder.com, and I've applied to them and that's gone no where. I'm assuming it's b/c they'd rather have someone w/ experience =(

I do live in a rural area but it's a horrible tourist trap in the summer, so I know the hospitals will probably hire more nurses to deal w/ the larger summer population (this place literally doubles or triples in the summer), but I'm SO frustrated I literally think I'll NEVER get an LPN job until the summer, or even until I finish my RN.

This is caused me so much frustration, I've literally been crying every other day for the past month or so.

Have you tried going to the places et talking with the HR director? I found that I have better results when I actually go in et talk with them et file an application rather than just relying on the internet.

Are there any skilled nursing facilities in your area? It seems to me that they are easier to get hired all year round. I may be wrong, but that would be my guess. And do you have a local paper with classified ads? I would check that out. sometimes jobs are not listed online but will be in the paper.

I was wondering if something is going on in the medical field. A friend of mines graduated from RN school in Decemer 2005 ... passed the NCLEX in March 2006, told me a few days ago that she can't find a job. Also, I have read about others on the forum who are not working after completing a LPN/LVN or RN program. I'm getting scared because I'm expecting to take the NCLEX next month and I really need to work to pay off my student loans.

However, I feel like you megananna7, I believe they really want people with experience, but how are we to get exp. if nobody gives us a chance.

Megananna7, have you tried applying for a part-time or weekend position, until something else comes along. That will at least give you some experience under your belt.

You have to call HR, they take forever at least ours does. So call them and if you applied to a specific unit find out who the mgr is and call them.

Did I see you were an LPN? Hospitals in my area are not hiring LPNs.

Have you tried working with a pool? They have flexible hours so that you can still go to school for your RN, and you can make $$ because they usually pay more than hospitals. I don't know a lot of hospitals in my area that use LPNs either. I work for Maxim and I would recommend it to anyone. Give it a try!

sounds like delaware. about 50 of us graduate with a chance to sit for lpn boards in may. (and, of course, we aren't the only school around). There are 3 hospitals in the area. One is hiring 4 lpn positions, with 2 of them going to current cna's there. (not to mention, they start at what we make as cna's.) Another doesn't hire lpn's at all unless they are in the rn program, and believe me pickings are slim. They have several current cna's who will be lpn's. The third, i haven't been to yet, to find out anything. i would like to do an externship for the summer, but that route is even less narrow. it feels as if it has been all for nothing. i'm burned out, and haven't even started yet!

Are you from Delaware? I am. I live in Sussex County. I've applied to Nanticoke, Bayhealth (Milford & Kent), Beebe, PRMC in Salisbury MD, and AGH in Berlin MD.

Here in NC where I live hospitals won't hire LPN's you may have some luck in LTC or Home Health

yes, i am. and just so everyone knows, i am not a nurse yet. i know my name says i am, i didn't read the instructions very well when i signed up last year. i signed up with a different name, and didn't realize until after megananne7 replied that the name was the "nurse" one. i emailed allnurses and hope to have it taken care of soon.

i'm at del tech owens campus, you too?

taking my boards in june, i hope

just frustrated, though

and again, after i posted

i realized i didn't include those maryland hospitals

although, berlin is way too far for me to go

i don't particularly enjoy going to beebe

the ride is horrible, especially in the summer

(going there in the morning)

i like it there so far.

where have you been for clinical rotations?

Yep, I'm at the Owens campus too. I'm in my 1st semester of 2nd level now. My first semester I went to Lewes Conv. Center behind Beebe and my 2nd semester I went to Beebe and a bunch of other places for the specialties. So far this semester I've done to Milford, a bunch of places for Psych nursing and then I start at PRMC next week.

I live about 20 min from AGH, so it's the closest hospital to me.. but I have yet to see an LpN position open at all, although my gastroenterologist told me to apply and mention his name anyway. No luck yet.
