Told i was not working out after 2 weeks...shocked and discouraged

Hey all

I have been a nurse for five years, spent my first two years in the hospital. I was an excellent nurse, but worked with two nurses who would not stop harassing me because they slept at work, didn't complete paperwork, etc and I guess they thought I would rat them out because they thought I was a "goody two shoes by the book nurse". Anyhoo, other than those two, I loved my job. I, however, moved on to home health after a referral from a friend...that went well but I moved unexpectedly 3 months after starting.

Long story shorter, I took a year off to help run my husband's new business. I returned to hospital nursing in a "resource position" ICU,PCU, Neurotrauma, Peds, OB, etc. I took critical care courses which I passed and then proceeded to work for 18 months when I became ill and my father died of cancer. I again took some time off to recover. After dealing with the loss of my father and a miscarriage, I decided to work a 8-5 position with no holidays and weekends or call. (FAMILY NOT MONEY WAS MY NEW PRIORITY) Big mistake, the position was as home health director for a nonskilled facility. Needless to say I hated it , I quit after 6 months. I found a job immediately, skilled, and with the schedule I wanted!!:D

The job required nonstop infusions, IV starts, etc with a research component. I got along super with everyone there. I worked with a veteran oncology nurse who could stick anyone, anywhere. She ran the infusion side. I worked under 2 different nurses..Long story but after day 12 (only 6 days in infusion) she, oncology nurse, tells me to see HR and HR tells me it is not working out. I ask why OBVIOUSLY, HR said I was having trouble sticking. I was only unable to stick one guy. I asked for assist with two others, cause I thought I was still training but they "she" wanted a more veteran nurse who could take over 10 or more patients. SHE never even let me try to handle all the patients... And I was learning chemo drugs, I have never even given those!! I have never been let go period!!! ever!! I guess I need to hear I am not the only one :cry: and a little encouragement for my self esteem as this was a major blow. (I only graduated top of my class and got let go with a nursing shortage going on :o)

Sorry to heard that. I hope you can move on. Just make sure they are not put any blacklist on you otherwise it is hard for you to find another job. It happen to me when my job fired me and I had a hard time finding a job.

People are not nice out there. I learn that from my previous experience.

It may not have been your skills at all. It is possible that the other nurse did not like something about you and blaming your skills was her way to get rid of you to make way for someone who would get along better with her. Don't let this experience color your outlook while you look for something else. Good luck getting a new position.

Thanks...Of course my family and friends think she just didn't like me but she sure was fake about it, if she didn't. I just want to get back to work, I even turned down an interview a week ago because I thought things were going so well.:uhoh3:

So many want the schedule you had. Sounds like they just didn't care about you - so why work in a enviorment where the co-worker(s) can run to HR and get away with having you fired without you haven been given a chance to defend yourself? Sounds like you were intentionaly set up for failure. Sorry this happened to you - my feelings would be hurt, too. :cry:

The scenario as presented does seem as though they were just looking for an excuse to get rid of you. I don't say that to hurt your feelings, because it was probably not something that you did, but more likely a personal problem on the part of the other nurse. She should have discussed it with you, but she took the coward's way out.

Look at it this way: If this is the way employees are treated, it doesn't appear to be a good place to work. It is probably better that you found out sooner rather than later.

I wish you the best of luck in finding a position that values you and is more supportive.

It sounds like a small group and that the oncology nurse didn't want to work with you. It's better that you found that out now. These small units can be killers if you don't fit in. I don't blame you for feeling bad.

You say that you 'got along great' with everyone. It sounds to me that you totally misread that situation.

Anyone else notice there is a lot of this going on these days? Used to be you would work with someone and get them up to speed. It was expected that anyone new would have strong points and weak points and that with proper support and training they could bring the weak points up to snuff. Now days it like nurses are like tissue paper, disposable.

I've misread situations in the past myself, so I feel your pain.

You would like my unit, you can be a real person there. There is a place for us in this world. :redbeathe

I agree with David 100%, I know it's hard and very not right, but thank your lucky stars you got out of a bad position, chalk it up to experience and move on to another job that will repect you and your skills....

sorry to hear that. i, too, have had some similar experiences, and i am a very good nurse also. i have the references and the reviews to back it up. all i can tell you is that try to move on and take this event as a positive thing.....it may be that you are really meant to be somewhere else...some nurses are so evil...a lot of nurses are jealous. i worked as a traveler in a job as a recovery nurse....i had never done recovery, but i had 4 years of cardiac medsurg; one year of interventional radiology and 6 years of er experience. i told the manager that i didn't have pacu experience....i was upfront about it. she agreed to hire me anyway. one week after being in pacu, my recruiter calls me and says that the manager was "concerned" about my performance....talk about being ****** off and caught off guard.....all the nurses had told me all week long how "quick" i had caught on, etc. so the only way the manager could even come to the conclusion that i wasn't making it was at the recommendation of one or all of those ***** nurses. luckily, i made it work for me. i've been there a year now, but now only per diem. what kills me is that when i decided to go back to er fulltime, the manager that thought i wasn't cutting it, offered me a fulltime job and wanted me to sign on with them! who the hell would do such a thing? they didn't give me any benefit of the doubt. why would i work fulltime for a manager that has no balls and for nurses that tried to railroad me into leaving. so keep a smile on your face, tell them to **** off and move on to something better.
