Story on Oprah: Cradle Rape

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I watched Oprah today and I've never felt more disgusted or ill in my life, hearing about babies that are being raped in South Africa by grown, AIDS infested 'men' who have been told that if they have sex or 'lay with a child' that the purity of the virgin child will cause the AIDS to go away.

Have any of you ever heard a more sickening thing? They told of a 8 month old........8 MONTHS OLD......that had been savagely gang rapes and cut. The baby was found abandoned and was rushed to the hospital. The injuries so severe, that even the ER doc's cried. AMAZING TO ALL, that precious little miracle lived!! She was adopted by an amazing lady and the baby, now 2 is healthy, loving, and doing well.

My heart is so heavy with this horrafic thing that is going on.

As nurses, what could we do? I don't know how I would even react if I had to treat a patient like this. Would my emotions consume me? Could I be partial?? Oprah said that the country is ashamed. I GUESS SO!! What could our country, our medical society do to help stop this?? Any suggestions??

I think we should remember that American money IS concentrated in America. Our foreign aide is a tiny percentage of our spending, and even then a big chunk is going to Israel (a place with a very good standard of living). It isn't like we are choosing to feed and clothe Africans at the expense of Americans.

i hate to nip at your heels, but i am going to have to disagree! yes, we do have problems within our own country--fortunately; none of them include a viral genocide. (admittedly, considerably more people in the united states have access to information about sexually transmitted diseases.) it is my opinion that when you take something for your own profiteering, and neither replace nor restore it, you are stealing. western exploits within africa have contributed to the instability of government, substantial poverty, and inability to address growing health concerns. volunteer based programs are commendable in their efforts to tackle africa's mounting crisis, but is it fair for power hungry politicians to pass this bill on to those not responsible for the abuse of leadership? to keep our tax dollars within our own borders, we have to work to keep our noses there, too. moral obligation aside, when an entire race is nearly obliterated, we all lose. :crying2:

Well said Sarah!

AIDS is a disaster for the African continent and no, closing your eyes and hoping it won't affect you is not gonna help.

Currently only 100.000 people out of the 40 million living with AIDS in southern Africa receive treatment, what is that.... the other 39.9 million can't afford it, because the pharmaceutical companies elsewhere do not want to reduce their prices and profit.

How is that for foreign aid?

Just what difference ...as a Christian...make it any easier to find it abhorrant?

I don't think allthingsbright was trying to equate nonChristian with immorality. Just using it as an identy. This is who they are.

I didn't see any insults in the post.

So, it was being used as an "Identity" - who they are.

I am white ....well, depending on the Country one is from..I might be considered white. It is my " identity". I am also a woman by any country's definition.

So if I said, "It is so hard for me, AS A WHITE WOMAN, to see how sin causes such perverseness in people...and to hear such graphic details..is just beyond belief."

Do you think that no one would take offense or imply that these acts were more tolerable to those that are nonWhite?

And say, "Maybe, a dose of White culture would do them good".

Sorry, guys but it doesn't fly.

Opra? Then there is reality. 1 in how many? Procecution rate? Reliable sources?

not to hijack your thread, but i thought the following quote, as per the ana provision 9.4 drives home our role as nurses.

"a nurses primary responsibility...is to health...health is understood as being broader then delivery and reimbursement systems, but extending to health related sociocultural issues such as violation of human rights, homelessness, hunger, violence, and the stigma of illness."

you are right jaloza. we are all in the "fight" together!

Horrifically desperate situations will bring out evil in mankind! Expect more of these horrific cases to occur. We can't even begin to imagine what AIDS is doing to them over there. We have no F%#$&ing clue. Our country, and others as well, stand by and do next to nothing to help them. THATS THE REAL HORROR! WE DO NOTHING while they are suffering unimaginable things. It's desperate over there...deperate. imgagine our AIDS epidemic exponentially increased...then you can start to get a glimpse of what it really is like over there. Imagine any of us being there and standing by and doing nothing watching this infant being raped....just standing there. Now you can see what our country and other countries are doing while they, a third world society unable to form a formidable defense for lack of resources against AIDS is suffering unimaginable things. And we just stand by while they, less fortunate than we are, get savagely attacked by AIDS.

Clearly the men who are doing this horrific thing are totally deceived. They are probably being told this by some witch doctor person. It is a false religion/healing going on here. I have heard of stories similar to this one from Chrisitan missionaries in other countries. they talk about true healings and deliverance from demonic influences once the people come to believe in Christ.

About the only thing we can do,short of going over there ourselves, is pray and perhaps send money.

Anyone want to go?

I'm going to try to post a photo from the website of my son's team in Africa. I was going through them again tonight and saw this one baby and thought of the poor girl this thread is about.

It is so sick I can barely think about it. I really don't know what we *can* do to improve the situation. For example I have heard of many people trying to educate on Condoms, etc. yet the culture thinks that is not "manly" ... so what can you do...... :crying2:

I understand what you are saying.

Still don't think anyone meant any disrespect to anyone else.

Having been raised in a deeply religious Southern Baptist family, my people used that phrase everyday, many times.

"As a Christian..." They did not ever mean to imply that others would see things different.. it was simply a cultural phrase. (That might not be the right term, but you know what I mean).

Again, look for the insult... it just wasn't there.

We both can agree on the devastation brought on by HIV.

My biggest issue: raping a child. A man would have to already be "turned" that way, or he would not be able to maintain an erection. Possibly, could this just be a way that many perverts have found to justify pediphilia?

Am an RN in Britain and i did not watch Oprah.Am an african man and have been working abroad for only one year . Before that i worked extensively in africa for 12 yrs and i can tell you the myth of expunging the virus by having sex with a virgin is not just in south africa but widespread and documented in many communities across the good continent. I know of tribes in east and central africa where it is rooted. What worries me is that this myth is not and has not been a priority in what the HIV campaigners,NGOs tackling HIV/AIDS and relevants governments are doing to combat this scourge. Talk of getting needs wrong. Its one of those things which has to be seen to be believed. And its DISGUNTING
