First year nursing student
The hardest thing is when you start working, because your schooling does not necessarily prepare you for employment. With so many specialties out there, schooling must adopt a generalist mentality. Once you graduate, find an employer with a Nurse Residency program or Internship program. Another option is to work as a "Nurse Tech" later on, after you have at least one year of MED/Surg class under your belt. These things will help it stick, not to mention make clinicals easier. Best wishes!

Determining faculty clinical competence
Hello, I have been a clinical instructor for about 1 year. I LOVE my job, but am learning that I need to demand more of my students. Since there was no formal training here, I seem to remember that there is an actual course available online fo clinical instructors--university based. However, I do not remember the name of the university. Is there anyone out there who knows of such a course? Please reply. I am depserate.

Is this understaffing (or is it me?)
Don't go there! Do not risk your license. Do not risk making a mistake because you feel rushed and hurried. There has to be something else out there. Don't touch it! Joni

Need advice-Night shift LPN at LTC
I have worked noc shift on and off. THE MOST important thing is that you get your rest and SLEEP! Whatever it takes, even if you have to take meds to get you to sleep. Make your room dark, and I mean totally dark. Chang your body clock if you anticiapte you will be working regularly. Also, Try to find some drug stores with 24 hr pharmacists on duty. You never know when you will need a pharmacist. Got any RN friends who work noc shift too? If not, find some, they will be invaluable to you in the middle of the night when you are not sure how to handle a situation. And PRAY for no staff call ins. Better yet, just pray any way. Best of Luck! JOni

HUGE DECISION-- honest opinions please!!!
I tend to be a conservative and would thin about waiting the extra year. I can understand your desire to get out of the ICU, but think about the bills you could pay off if you waited the extra year. I say revamp your budget NOW and live simply now, so you can take the other money and pay off some stuff and save the rest. Also, are there any children involved? Good Luck! JOni

Story on Oprah: Cradle Rape
Clearly the men who are doing this horrific thing are totally deceived. They are probably being told this by some witch doctor person. It is a false religion/healing going on here. I have heard of stories similar to this one from Chrisitan missionaries in other countries. they talk about true healings and deliverance from demonic influences once the people come to believe in Christ. About the only thing we can do,short of going over there ourselves, is pray and perhaps send money. Anyone want to go?

stupid mistake- wanna quit
Hey There! It's not about you. Judging from your end quote you must be a christian. In that case you must learn that The Lord is with you. You must know is that you should NEVER PERFORM TASKS THAT YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO DO. It seems as though you have put nursing on a pedestal. Nurses are nothing more than people with jobs. we can take ourselves too seriously sometimes and think we are somthing special because of something we do. We are special because we are God's children and that is the only reason. He alone is worthy of praise. Understand that there is a much bigger plan in place than what you could fathom. God took care of you and that patient, despite your mistake--and we ALL MAKE THEM!! Receive the forgiveness. Take the focus off yourself, CHOOOSE to be grateful that the situation was taken care of, Ask God to show you how you could avoid such a situation again. Perhaps working in a smaller ER to start out. These days healthcare is so fast paced it is a MIRACLE that more mistakes do not take place. Admit your mistakes in all arenas, not just the workplace. BE a witness, don't just DO witnessing. Godspeed!!! Joni p
