I am not a nurse but has anyone ever heard of a doctor putting a man in stirrups to do a rectal exam with a speculum?

OUCH!

no. I never heard of it.

NEVER!!! I don't know of any guy that would go along with that also

Specializes in Psych, hospice, family practice.

My question is, why do you ask?

don't they use stirrups for scopes??? I'm not a GI nurse, nor thankfully have I ever had to have a colonoscopy, but it would make sense, but never heard of that for just a plain old rectal/prostate exam....I agree, I don't know of a guy that would go for that at all!!!!

I've never heard of that, either. And believe me, if that had EVERRRRR happened to my hubby, I'd definitely have heard about it from him.

But -- and this is from the small but very sick part of me, so I cringe before typing this) -- it would be funny, I'd like to see it.

(Cringe)

I'm no GI nurse either, but maybe if they're checking for a rectal fistula or 'rrhoids? I know that OR positioning for surgical correction of a rectoanal fistula is in stirrups.

Just a guess.

The end. And have a nice day.

That (a man in stirrups) I would love to see  :rotfl:

OK, this is really gross, but I did see pictures once taken from some medical book of a man in stirrups AND a speculum being used to remove a grape jelly jar the guy had lodged in his chute. Told ya it was gross. :imbar

Dennie--sounds like a cowboy story to me.

Lou--if the jar had broken while being removed--THAT might have been gross. (hopefully, this was not a restaurant-sized jar)
