per diem pay

Just curious-

One of the hospitals near me pays per diems the exact same rate as salaried, none of the benefits. In other words, much less compensation for working per diem.

Has anybody ever heard of this?

That makes no sense but with the financial crunch some hospitals are facing, I am betting more hospitals will be reducing their per diem rates.

Unless there were no other jobs available I don't think I'd go for that. What I love about per diem pay is the big $$.

I always thought PRN got paid more, but I learned it is all relative. I have been a nurse for a year and a half, and I would make a lot more if I were PRN, but no benefits. One of our nurses recently had to go PRN due to health issues - she had worked at our hospital for 15-20 years. She had to take a $4/hr pay cut to go PRN. They do pay our PRN people $4/hr more if they are willing to sign up for 24hrs a pay period, but that was not feasible for this nurse.

The pay rates here are set rates that are specific to the shift you work and days(weekends pays a higher hourly rate).

A nurse with a few years experience would find the $40/hr weekend night rate a big jump in pay.

An very experienced nurse might take a pay cut working the $28/hr weekday wages.
