Patients with interesting occupations (or not)

Since we have a thread going on patients who are dependant on the government for healthcare due to their dire straits, I thought I would start one on patients with interesting or colorful occupations.

I find that asking a patient about their jobs is often a great icebreaker. Sometimes I'm very surprised to find a patient whom I initially judge to be a needy 'loser' ends up having an 'important' occupation. Someone who seems relatively 'highbrow' might end up having been an underachiever who has not acheived worldly success in life.

Sometimes I'll really get treated to a facinating conversation with a retired gentleman who has had an illustrious or colorful career. I love finding out about patients, and most people love talking about themselves!

I once had a patient who was rumored to be the "Snake Lady" at the local strip club. I never found out if it was true, but she definitely had snakes- she talked about her "babies" and showed us pictures!

Given the time and opportunity, I really enjoy talking to people about their life experiences and the history they've lived through.

you are right. perhaps i was thinking about the pair of teachers who got mixed up in the murder of one of their fellow teachers and her two children. both were tried, convicted and went to prison, if i remember correctly. and there was a made for tv movie about that as well.

woody:balloons:

that was also in pa peter coyote was the murderer he played william bradfield jr. the movie was echoes in the darkness (1987) (tv)

the jock yablonski murder movie with charles bronson was act of vengeance (1986) (tv)

so both movies were done around the same time for tv

I began nursing as an LVN (1977) prior to my BSN (1995). I have had soooo many interesting patients.

Most famous: Lady Bird Johnson while working at St. David's Hospital in Austin, TX. She was gracious but the Secret Service Agents were the most memorable component of that moment.

I was also the patient of a 'famous' nurse. I had my two children in Haskell, TX in the 1980's, the DON of that small hospital also circulated in the delivery room. Anita Perry RN is the wife of the Govenor of Texas, Rick Perry.

Don't be too quick to doubt your pt's claims - even psych pts. Many years ago I worked in a large psych facility. One of the pts. made what were considered grandiose claims to have played with the Grateful Dead. Everyone sort of went - "Yeah, right" until the day Jerry Garcia turned up to visit him.

Now that is something!

My story is boring compared toeeryone else's. But my most 2 memoriable patients were priests in the tele unit. I'd visit with them after my shift. One actually married us.

I wasn't yet a nurse but still a unit clerk when we got a quite infamous murderess on our unit in for a CABG.

No names but she was known in my area for killing her married lover, a "diet Dr." in the 80's I think.

And then Joan Rivers came to visit her.

So is murderess an occupation? LOL

As I nurse I had a great conversation with a guy that owned a tattoo shop. I am inked so I was plenty interested.

I also had a guy that fought in 2 wars. WW2 and the Korean War I think? I loved his stories, he told me about Normandy. I think it's amazing what the older generation went through.

Gosh, I've loved reading all the interesting occupations :) It's amazing how each of these persons touch OUR lives!

Who has been intersting? hmmmm we've had everyone from Ladybird Johnson's best friend (the sweetest lady, always wanted to help the other residents) to a gentleman who was in the Justice Dept during the Nixon administration, and served on the TX Supreme Court and as TX Attny General, to a lady who never held a "job" but who for years volunteered at a home for unwed mothers .

one of the ones who has most touched my life is a WWII vet who cried in my arms one night while telling me about a parachute drop and watching the horrors the happened to some of our soldiers while parachuting into France

I have taken care of 1 retired Vikings Football coach, 1 retired Raiders gaurd, 1 first runner up in the Miss California pagent, 1 of the first Breck Shampoo girls, a nephew of the owner of the Mustang Ranch....If you do not know what that is...don't ask. lol...

Those are just a few off of the top of my head.

When I worked at a community health ctr, we had an elderly lady who had worked in the 30s-40s in Atlantic City as a showgirl, or as she called it, a "hoochie-coochie girl." She was quite a character even in her 80s. I remember we all cried when her brother dropped by & told us she had died.

I'm a member of our state's advanced practice society and I went to our state capitol to lobby for passage of our nurse practice act. I met with my legislator and he asked me what I did and I told him that I was a dialysis APN and he asked if I knew Mr Smith! Mr Smith is one of our patients and a guy who was a bit of a pain in the hiney. Turns out Mr Smith is personal friends of many in our capitol and is quite influential due to his experience in education!

Another one of my patients was quite elderly, 97 years old to be exact. He seemed like a nice guy. He died a little bit ago and his obit said that he had paid for multiple disadvantaged kids to attend college. He was a millionaire!

Taught me not to quickly judge folks.

Wow Dreamer, keep it going!

Took care of a man who was a Navy SEAL during Vietnam. Told me some very interesting stories that aren't in the history books.

Took care of a woman who survived the holocaust. I recall she had numbers from the concentration camp tattooed on her arm.
