That's really rough. How do other schedules look? Can you trade shifts to get less rotation?

Maybe not complaining, but you said you couldn't work nights.

I've had similar things happen in the past, say something and then they really give it to you.

THe schedule is insane.... And I'm not sure... I just get told we're short staffed and if I don't like the schedule to look for another job. So trading would only make someone else work nights...and then eliminate the 8 hour shift... I just feel like I've given my last for this place and been screwed over for the last time...

I'd check first to make sure they didn't make a mistake. If they did it on purpose, then I would look for another job stat. That's downright disrespectful!

I don't know the job opportunities where you live or your exp. but your vent is beyond legit. There are numerous studies that demonstrate how a schedule such as yours causes ill health and attributes to medication errors. Personally, I'd approach the manager and state under no uncertain circumstances can your schedule safely be done. Offer to be a team player, as flexabile as possible, but you need at least two days off after a night shift to switch back and forth.

We all go through periods of short staffing, especially when the holidays approach, it gets worse. If your manager is willing to adjust your schedule to something more reasonable, then you should consider toughing it out. If this is an ongoing cyclic event, then I'd suggest getting a resume in order and putting it out everywhere. You don't have to jump ship... but once calls start coming through, you may "accidentally" find something more suited to your sleep/wake schedule. No harm comes in looking at greener pastures and this seems to be an ideal time! :twocents:

THank you...that advise is really good. I'm going to talk to her tuesday, make sure it's not a mistake like someone else said, check my other options (which are pretty good atm) I won't jump ship unless I have something else lined up. I mean, I'm not a wilting flower, but thinking about that schedule is making me want to sit in a corner and cry. Thanks again! :)

Seriously this sounds typical of a LTC facility. And you wonder why they're short staffed?

I would personally invite those who came up with your brilliant schedule to try it themselves for 2weeks. What a load of sh*t, and I bet you have more seniority than most of your fellow nurses.

I do. Another nurse and I have the most seniority and we've been there half a year almost.

And this is the worst LTC I've been in. Ever.

its happening where i am and thats acute care. :madface: . pretty recent also. all the new wantads say "available for all three shifts" it makes you sick to work like that. i have vented before about working all three shifts in the same week sometimes with one day apart between. not sure what the rationale is, because we have very high turnover now- most leave for office, homecare, etc jobs with semi-normal hours. guess the company only cares about filling the holes anyway they can- if you cant cut it, some new person will be glad to take your place. that really sucks. its one thing to rotate the shifts maby 2 weeks of days 2 weeks of eves 2 weeks of nites, but to do them all in the same week??? :nono: :nono:

I hoping someday i can get off THAT rollercoaster ride :-(
