I took a year of medical terminology while doing my pre-reqs and it really helped me pick words apart. If you can get your hands on a med term book it might help. As for looking into NCLEX stuff, my suggestion is not to worry about it AT ALL at this point in the game. Nursing school itself is gonna eat your brain. Wait until you are close to graduation and then get yourself an NCLEX book, such as Kaplan or Saunders. You are gonna get so much crammed into your brain these next few semesters it is unreal. I had a two year degree, a 4 year degree, and 4 classes short of another 4 year degree when I began my ADN program. None of my other college degrees were anywhere near as overwhelming as nursing school. Whew!

A lot of tests in nursing schools will have those questions that make you say "but why?" Some of them you may never know. lol Ask you teacher to explain it but if that doesn't work, try getting another student to help you. In your first semester you can't be expected to know a lot about "advanced situations". I also think forming a study group might help too. Studying together really helped me because you get another person's (or several other persons) perspective on things. If there is terminology you don't know, throw it out on allnurses. There's a ton of great people here who would be happy to help you.

Last but certainly not least, relax. Nursing school isn't really fun but it should be as enjoyable as you can make it. Don't stress anymore than you have to.

Well, I have to say, that the very beginning stuff will be short-lived. Get yourself something like Elkin, Perry, and Potter Nursing Interventions and Clinical Skills, and start going over your "task" related stuff. I like the Prentice Hall Publishing, Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN, Reviews and Rationales by Mary Ann Hogan. This book is more real and professional than Saunders review... Great for exam review as it gets down to buisiness.

Oh and to give you a necessary tip: These test questions will require you look at things differently than you would taking any other exam... didn't look if you already have another degree.

This takes a pragmatic approach. I fought it at first. After all it is a ridiculous game for the most part, and I didn't go into nursing to play a ridiculous game. Give me real situations, give me science!!! Most likely you will error because of not understanding the game you are playing not because of lack of anything else.

I'd love if nursing education relied more heavily on pathophys and whatcha gonna do about it! You can just give me the pamphlet on therapeutic communication thanks... too much wasted time on that, IMHO!

And my teacher is older than dirt, itself, and isn't much help. I have tried. She's one of those teachers who I am trying to ride out..crossing my fingers and praying that I pass her class and never have to look back. I think our school is in the process of replacing her...so I hope!

I've learned the most from those teachers!!!

She's incredibly intelligent. She's just a horrible teacher..and I am not saying this to blame her for anything. But the woman yells at us and tells us she told us stuff that she NEVER did. She assigns one chapter and asks for us to turn in another. If you ask her a question, she gets flustered, like you're trying to give her a hard time or something. She's borderline psycho. I love her as a person..but as a teacher...SAD SAD SAD. I can't even begin to explain to you. I guess nursing programs cannot do too much...as most have a hard enough time filling nurse teaching positions to begin with. :(

I just ordered Kaplan's NCLEX review book from Amazon. It's only my first year, but most of the questions on the exams I've had are NCLEX style, so my teachers say.

with your fundamentals textbook do you have a cd or website? our textbook was on the elsevier website and there were questions which related to fundamentals.

the newest version of saunders nclex review book is what i would recommend. 1st read the short chapter for test taking strategies. then on one sheet of paper make a list of those strategies. in the saunders book look in the contents and there are several chapters which are relevant to fundamentals nursing. using the list of test taking strategies practice the questions at the end of the chapters for the current content you are covering in class.

this will get you familiar with using the test taking strategies and practice of nclex style questions.

also fundamentals of nursing made incredibly easy and fundamentals reviews and rationales would include practice questions appropriate for first semester nursing.

Other than taking Hurst Review three times. Once the summer before my last year, again the winter before my last semester, and a third time right after graduation; I did not start studying for the NCLEX until after graduation. I passed with 75 questions on the first time. Focus on school for now. Worry about starting to study for the NCLEX after graduation. You will have enough to study with your regular school work.

I think you were asking for beginner's practice questions. Not so you could practice for your actual NCLEX but to better prepare for taking your tests in your current class. If so here is a link to an excerpt of a book that may help.
