Mandated

I have a question. I was called by my job saying a nurse called off for her on call shift tomorrow and that they are mandating me to take it and I will have to go in they have scheduled cases (OR). Is his allowed?

I'm already going to be on call Sunday during the day then working Sunday midnight.

I had plans tomorrow and was not prepared for this to happen. Extremely upset. Any insight?

Are you on call for tomorrow? If so, you're pretty much stuck. If not, you would need to check the laws for your state.

In the absence of something that prevents them from doing so, employers are free to require whatever they choose. This is the big advantage to states that have prohibited mandatory overtime for nurses, which often not only applies to overtime but anything in excess of the agreed upon schedule and on-call coverage. In non-mandatory overtime prohibited states, union contracts can sometimes help avoid these situations, otherwise you're generally out of luck.

Refer to your job description. How do they expect you to be on call before a midnight shift and mandate you for the day before?

They are using you and abusing you. OR nurses are golden, you have many options.

I would start looking for a job that does not beat me up.

Mandating the person who called off makes more sense than someone scheduled before and after her shift.

I bring up mandating in the job interview. If my boss is coming in too during a crisis, I will be there, no complaints. But if its just filling holes, or covering sick calls, I do that on a voluntary basis only. My commitment to the job is my own schedule, that's it.
