Am a new nurse. The Dr Ordered Zosyn 3.375mg IV q6HR. The bag says 100ml vol, 200ml/hr to infuse over 30 min, what rate do you set the pump at? Please i need an answer. Thanks

Really? Find your preceptor and ask for him or her to guide you. Much love to you from one new nurse to another but you need to be able to calculate this on your own.

As the previous poster said - you answered your own question. If you are ever unsure of something it is more important to be safe (and ask a question) than appear that you know what you are doing and make a mistake. set the pump at a rate of 200, thus the 100ml bag will infuse in 30 min.

Is this some sort of a trick question?

The only thing I will say that is (sorta) in defense of the OP: we occationally get IV meds (such as antibiotics) that have an infusion rate listed on the label different from the infusion rate that comes up when it is entered into the pump.

the aqnswer is in the question. you can always call pharmacy.

you need to find your perceptor, supervisor, instructor immediately, you need very close guidance in medication administration and dosages.

Sometimes the easiest things can trip us up... don't be freaked out by the information on the bag, but rather break-it-down: If you have 100 cc in volume, and you want it to infuse over 30 minutes, remember that a pump will usually work in milliliters per hour, so divide the mls in the bag, by the time IN HOURS:

100 / 0.5 = 200. Which is, btw, what your label reflects. And yes, it should by 3.375 gms. :)
