In Her Shoes - Interesting Observation

I was watching the movie "In Her Shoes" with my wife the other day. When Cameron Diaz was working as a tech in the assisted living center I was once again amazed at the ability of scrubs to make every figure turn to "blah".

I do not mean this in a sexist way, nor do I mean to put anybody down. It just reminded me of an old story I read by a man describing the myth's and truth's about being married to a nurse. One of them was the Myth of Nurses as Sex Kittens in revealing mini-skirts, white fishnet stockings, and way to small tops. He describes the reality of a nurse-outfit that consist of unisex non-form-fitting scrubs that would cause you to fail to notice if Pamela Anderson was walking by.

I noticed that as well. Most scrubs I end up with are huge sacks. The only top I ever found that somewhat flattered my figure was a princess cut that buttoned. It finally faded so badly I trashed it.

First of all let me say that I absolutely loved that movie!!!! It was really great. Reminded me of my older sister & I -how we fought when we were younger and now get along much better. Anyhow, you're right, scrubs do tend to look blah on nearly everyone. When I go to work, I wear scrub pants with a regular short sleeved, solid color, scoop neck top. I don't want to look like I'm pregnant when I'm not! :)

When I worked for a family practice doctor back in the late 60s early 70s he insisted I wear

dresses. Well back then you were lucky if the hemline came within 3" of getting down to your knee. Believe me I was no Pamela Anderson -vertically or horizontally, but when I wore that dress a couple of times he let me know it would be preferable for us to start wearing pants.

Then came scrubs. They are verrrrry comfortable. They also make you all look like criminals in a line up. I even saw a catalog recently that had orange jumpsuits for sale. :)

Scrubs definitely are an equalizer...so are patient gowns!

I had one patient ask me why so many of the nurses came to work in their pj's!

yep i like scrubs. i like printed scrub tops. but i think the op is right. scrubs are a great equilizer of female body shapes. i'm not into fashion. i have an anxiety attack just thinking about shopping for clothes. i shop more for nursing uniforms then i do for regular clothes.

The scrub exchange where I work also offers blue OR scrub dresses. H*O*T. They even expose a tiny bit of knee, and, for those who have one, hint at a waist.

Even better: the regular scrubs are color coded according to size. So, if, say, you're usually teal, but once every month you're light blue for a few days--everyone knows to stay out of the way!

What I really liked about that movie was that all the retired people in the movie were actually residents in an independent living senior center!

I did notice that Cameron did not look great in scrubs, as well! I do disagree with Roy, though. I thought cammies were a tad better looking than scrubs. Perhaps, because they were pressed and I was thinnner then? I think scrubs are the most de-feminizing (is that even a word?) thing I have ever worn. Then again, do I want my patients thinking of me as a woman....
