Do you need a doctor's order to do an in-and-out catheter? my DON told me to do one to obtain a UA without a doctor's order and I told her no. know she is just mad with me...:argue:

Where I work in LTC we have a standing order for this.:candy:To clarify, this is for suspected UTIs . Wouldn't do it for urinary retention.....

It is an invasive, sterile procedure so yes you need an order. It is easy for other people to give out orders if they are not the ones that have to do them or be held accountable for them.

Straight caths require a doctor's order.

If there is no standing order you need one. Don't do it without one as your heinie will be on the line.
