Just ranting. Sorry, bear with me

So yeah, I'm working in an ICU where its divided into two teams, under two different managers. I've been trying to transfer to the other team because I am sick of my current manager's unsupportive attitude, playing favorites, not allowing us to apply for every third weekend like the other team can (its actually a unit policy but current manager doesn't want us to have every third weekend). My current managers go out of their way to say so many negative things about the other team, that are not true because I've worked over there many a time and enjoy it more over there than on my own team. So I asked to transfer but I have to wait because after hitting a roadblock I called HR to complain so now upper administration doesn't know how they are going to work out the transfer. This is completely ridiculous, just let me transfer. They let other people transfer to other units and trust me, many on my team are leaving. I think my current managers are fighting my transfer so hard because they are afraid of how they are going to look and they should be. For as many times as they pull me into the office to tell me how my negativity is bringing down the team, they need to look in the mirror and take a good look at who created all that negativity.

I'm just sick with frustration that its ok to let other nurses/NAs transfer to other units but when I want to go to a different area of my unit, I have to wait.

I'm sorry, TLS. What a crappy situation to be in. You're strong. You will persevere.

TurnLeftSide: Sounds to me like your manager is retaliating against you for your alleged "negativity"; that's a bunch of crap. Have you considered going to HR over this? Think about doing that....

let me give another perspective: i have witnessed this kind of treatment with other nurses in another facility i worked. almost 100% of the time a nurse who had trouble transfering was because of a poor reputation that was floated around by their current managers. a small percentage of nurses unable to transfer could not do so because they had too good a reputation and their managers told the other managers "hands-off". in your case, i think your mangers want you to go.

the problem is that they may have made it hard for you to do so by talking trash about you to others. so much so that no other manager wants you now. rather then tell you the truth they make up an administrative lie. they will have to take back the negative gossip they spread about you. my guess is that they either are not willing to do so in order to save face or they may be scrambling to clean up their mess at this time.

either way i think you need to be looking at another facility because i doubt you will get a transfer any time soon. besides even if you do transfer, you will probably be jumping from the fire pan into the fire due to malicious gossip. gl!

I have no idea what you are talking about MBA. They don't want me to go, that's the problem. They are losing senior people left and right and I'm one of the senior people. And the other manager whose team I want to transfer to, thinks very highly of me,so your perspective is rather warped.

Go red wings!

You are right about the fact that negativity in the team often flows from the management down. Anytime senior management senses that the bedside or direct care staff have bad attitudes they would be and generally are well served by watching the first line managers closely for a short time. Wisdom says that bad attitude is generally a trickle down phenomenon, especially if it is long term.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. I hope you get to tranfer and if they don't let you they will lose another great nurse. Shame they haven't decided to get rid of the disruptive management instead. Let it play out a day or two and then perhaps you can have a meeting with HR and the managers. Your current managers are going to make this as uncomfortable as they can not just for you but the managers on the other unit. They will try and break those managers down to the point they might just give up on you to serve their own purposes. For all the whining of your current management they know you are a good nurse and now want to keep you, but the damage is already done. Shameful.

I've seen this before. Managers don't want to let go of a good worker, so any possible roadblock is thrown out there. You are good and apparently, they can't afford to lose you - the flood gates would be opened.

Keep giving the same great care you've always given and keep your eyes open for any and all possibilities.

Just to make things clear, I want to transfer within the same unit. The unit is divided into two teams. I want to go to the other team. I did speak with HR and I have to wait until my NM to come back from leave because my manager's boss is now involved. So when they get back they are going to then decide if they will allow a transfer within the unit. It's crazy.
