Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello. I am due to start nursing school next year. I am very excited about the prospect, however, I just read a message board which contained very negative things about the nursing profession. Please let me know what it is really like as a nurse. I need to know the hard work is worth it in the end!

Hi there,

Unfortunately you will hear some negative things about nursing from people who are not with their lot of being a nurse, to those people I say to get out and go find something that makes you happy. I have over 20 yrs of all hospital based experience and wouldn't trade it for the world. Yeah sometimes it can be tough(especially when you first get out, until you get better at time management etc) but it will get better, remember it's all about our patients which is why we wanted to do this in the first place. I have done everything in hospital based settings except L&D, nursery, Mother/Baby, and dialysis. I started out in M/S and am currently an Admin Nsg Supervisor, in Jan/2006 I will take over the running of the busiest unit in my hospital(46 bed Med-Tele unit with over 70 employees). Find a job with a good preceptor program and maybe try and the precepting staff too, I always try and get a match for both the preceptor and the preceptee. And always take the negative comments with a grain of salt. Good luck and welcome to the world of Nursing....:) flaerman

Thaks so much for your advice. You did ease my mind. I am very excited about school, but It is scary as well. I do not know what to expect, and I have 2 children as well. Thanks again!

Thanks to all who replied!

Welcome to Allnurses.

Keep in mind, when you read a lot of negative posts that nurses go to these forums to vent their frustrations about their jobs. It's the safest place to go, and only other nurses can truly understand their problems.

What you don't see is the nurses who are content with their job or their day because nurses don't post like that as often.

Kiddo. . .it's normal to feel scared. I quaked for a couple of years every time I got close to the hospital, but I kept walking in to the place. The fear goes away as you become more confident in what you are doing. There are always nay-sayers out there. You have to learn to ignore what they are saying. If they are nurses themselves, shame on them for being such hypocrits and staying in a profession they "hate". Keep thinking positively because that is how you become successful in the world. You won't hear millionaires trashing business. If you bite the hand that feeds you it's time to go to the dog house.

The hard work is worth it. The end.

The message board that you read.....was it here? If not, then it is probably a bunch of bull from people who don't even know the first thing about nursing.

If it was here, take it with a grain of salt. Allnurses.com is a relatively safe environment for nurses, nursing students (me), and pre-nursing students (you) to vent our frustrations and get feedback. There are certain people who probably need to pick a new profession, but for the most part everyone I have talked to on these boards and in real life is very passionate about being a nurse.

Hope you hear many many positive aspects of nursing in the future.:)

You are all so great! I found this site by accident yesterday and I am so glad I did! I feel like part of an exclusive club now. Thanks for all of your encouragement!:p
