How does your hospital recognize, reward, and motivate staff (RN, CNA, etc.)?

I am a nursing student and am interested in how other hospitals recognize, reward, and motivate staff when it comes to change, or performing tasks consistently and going above and beyond. Is there a program your hospital or unit has in place to recognize certain staff members or motivate others to go above and beyond?

We have Diamond Awards. They are awards that are given to staff, by patients, for exceptional care/service. Occasionally, staff will recognize other staff members but not too frequently. Of course, there is also Employee of the Month and Employee of the year. Management also will send out thank you cards to us at home for something they deemed worthy. I thought those were REALLY awesome until I was looking on the hospital intranet and found a public file listing out specific people in upper management that were required to send out cards to specific employees. :) It was even more awesome when I noticed that mine were all marked as sent however, I only actually got ONE of them. LOL

Recognize, reward and motivate? I get a pay check every two weeks.

We have a monthly award called the Firestarter Award.I get e-mails all the time reminding me to nominate someone I think is worthy but we hear little about who actually won. Usually they give it to a manager or something.yay.

We have QUEST awards. Stands for something but I don't remember what. It is ranked like bronze, silver, gold and platinum. You get nomintated by co-workers and patients but almost no one ever fills them out so we rarely get recognized. I got a crappy mug for Nurse's Week. *shrug*

So what i'm hearing is that they either "don't" or what they do is rarely implemented regularly, or to the extent to which it should. Hmmm...what are your thoughts on things that would motivate you, or ways that you would like to be recognized?

We get an "attaboy" or "keep up the good work"!! Most satisfying!!

No hospital I have worked for had a reward system and I have worked for 8 different hospitals. Don't work in hospitals anymore, never will.

Our hospital does Employee of the Month, but the most recent postings I've seen are from last year, LOL! What I think would be the COOLEST thing is if the EEOTM was acknowledged in the monthly newsletters that are mailed to our homes (put it in a scrapbook!), also in all the elevators and break rooms at work, ON TIME, and WITH the names, positions, and quotes by nominating persons (what did this person do that was outstanding besides know someone?). It's a big hospital, so recognition is rare. The next obvious thing would be monetary rewards, whether in my poaycheck or as a gift card, or whatever. A pat on the back by my manager twice a year would be better than nothing, too.

We have this program called "Get Caught Fishing" around the hospital there are little drop boxes with a small forms and pencils. Basically anyone visitor, patient or employee can write on the form about an employee or department that went above and beyond. The person mentioned then gets the slip with a little pin that says "You Got Caught Being the Best" its a pretty cool reward system. Our manager also forwards letters written by patients and family about praise and such.
