Did anyone who is a new grad get a hospital job?

The only people from my graduating class who got jobs as new grad RNs in hospitals were people who either previously worked there, have relatives working there, or did the preceptorship in our senior year at the facility. I'm curious to know if anyone got a hospital job by just simply applying online without any other connections to the hospital?

Thanks.

Hospitals are finding more favor in those with experience than those without any experience. However, I know of friends who got their job after graduating. It's a matter of determination, luck, and skill.

Yes but I had to relocate. No connections at all. Just applied.

It took me about 6 mo, no previous exp working in a hospital - no connections, did not know anyone who worked there. I realized that my resume alone was not going to get me the job. I applied online, then went to HR (dressed business casual) dropped off my resume, mentioned that I had applied there several times in the past but never heard back. HR was sympathetic and passed on my resume to the nurse mgr. I knew that I could not rely on this alone so I went to the floor and talked to the nurse mgr personally on several occasions. I told her that I was available to work any shift that they had available - that I had no limitations on my schedule. She offered me an interview but I believe that persistence is the key.

I graduated in Aug 09 and only a couple of people from my class got jobs at the local hospital. Everyone else is either 1) unemployeed 2) work at a LTC 3) took a job offer at a hospital that was 2 hrs away which was the only hospital hiring new grads in the entire area. The ones that got the jobs at the local hospital, either had been working there or the did their last semester clinicals there. In other words they had "ins" and they still had to be VERY persistant to even get those. It is very tough out there right now for new grads. If you find something, anything hold on tight and fight for it. Offer any hours and don't negociate on pay. I was applying at all of the local hospitals and offering to do all weekends and nights, but I didn't get a single call back and I applied for any and all positions open. I finally applied at a LTC center, because I NEEDED a job and got a call back within a couple of days. I have now been there 4 months and just got promoted to evening and every other weekend RN supervisor. Make the most out of what ever you are offered and just know that once you get that 1-2 yrs experience then the market will open up for you. Good luck!!!

I had two job offers when I graduated. I did not have connections at either hospital. I applied to both online, but did call HR after to let them know. I believe most graduates in this area were able to find jobs. Of course this was December and not as many new graduates to compete with. Also some might have had to hold off on preferences. This is the upstate NY area.

There are no sign on bonuses and anymore. A few hospitals don't even hire new grads at this time. The one hospital that offered me a job had suspended hiring new grads after many per diems went full time due to the economy. After a few months they started hiring again.

Agree with twentytenrn. Got a job, but had to move out of state for it.

In my area ( Atlanta, GA) even the long term care facilities want experience!

Yes, I got a hospital job as a new grad and had no connections to the hospital.

I know how you feel! I posted a similar question and another nurse on here gave me some good advice so I finally called a hospital and talked to the Nurse Recruiter and she gave me a list of the hospital depts that do hire new grads, so I applied for that specific dept online and now I have a job interview Monday when my applications had been rejected at the same hospital for different departments! Try that and see if you have any luck!

I am only in my second semester, and have 1 year left to go (accelerated program). I was a CNA years ago and got certified here the same month I started school. About 1 month ago I got a job at one of the bigger hospitals as a CNA, and will have a guaranteed RN job once I graduate. Working while going to school will up your chances 10 fold.

I got a job at the largest private teaching hospital in the state (however had to move 300 miles away) without prior hospital experience, let me tell you it is quite a ride to work downtown in a level one trauma teaching hospital,I guess I got lucky, but I'm struggling a bit and developed panic attacks on my way to work..
