Controversial Job Offer

I have been offered an interview in an abortion clinic. I do not personally believe in abortion but do not judge others who do. I do not know all of the details of the job description but depending on what they are I think I could do fine in the job. Will future employers look down on this?

I wish you the best on the choice you make. I would be interested to see what others thought about what future employers would think also

I'd really examine what you believe before taking a job there. There was a time I'd have described how I feel the same as you do, and even seriously considered looking at working at a clinic because while I couldn't/wouldn't have an abortion myself, I believe strongly in the right to choose and wanted to be there for women that found themselves in a tough situation. But I was a friend's "escort" when she went and there's a difference between "not for me but I'll support you" from afar and "not for me but I'll support you" and being right there. I'm still a staunch supporter of a woman's right to choose, and would again totally support a friend that made that choice, but I know myself enough to know I couldn't work there everyday after just being in the waiting room that one time.

Examine strongly why it's "not for you" because while it may not be enough to make you go to the other side of a picket line, it could be enough to make it not the right environment for you to work in.

Now as for future work prospects, I'd probably not use it as a reference when trying to get a job at a Catholic hospital, and with a smaller employer, your going to be up against the personal beliefs of the person doing the hiring if they're against it. But if you were going to go for a typical hospital job at a typical non-religious-affiliated hospital, you'll probably find what most of us do, all you need is a nursing license to get in the door.:)

Future employers should not be too worried about your personal beliefs. If you are competent nurse and treat your patients with respect then you should be given the same opportunity as any other nurse. I took care of many patients whose life choices were very far from my mine, but it did not disqualify me from performing my job well. Good luck.

Do you think you'd find working in a abortion clinic rewarding?

Setting my Catholicism aside (as if I could!), I think that the potential for finding rewarding work in nursing is very high, and that if this isn't what you really want to do, then you shouldn't take the job.

I work in an abortion clinic as a nursing tech (I'm a junior in a BSN program). I've worked in two different clinics, for a total of about 4 years. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to hear from someone who's actually done the work.

If a potential workplace engaged in activities on a daily basis that went against my personal beliefs, I would not even consider working at that place of employment.

Although I am pro-choice on the topic of abortion, I can understand and appreciate the stance of persons who have pro-life beliefs. If I felt that abortion was the morally wrong action to take, I definitely wouldn't be working in a place that performed abortions around the clock.

This is just my two cents. :twocents:

Not sure what these clinics are like where you live, but here there are picketers everyday. Hecklers and bulletproof glass. There are threats against life and limb. You might end up with broken windows and slashed tires.

Would I do it? YEP. Someone has to and I am very very Pro choice. I had an abortion when I was 18 yo and the nurse that took care of me is one of the reasons why I feel nursing is for me. I want to be the nurse that helps a young woman like that wonderful nurse helped me.

Wow...sometimes we forget that someone has to work in these places that are healthcare professionals.

Abortion isn't a pleasant thing, even for people that choose that option. Just know that for the vast majority of the patients, they have thought long and hard about it. Not everyone can bear the thought of giving birth to a child and then giving it away.

I don't believe in abortion past 3 months gestation for any reason whatsoever. But I also know that I don't think I could give birth to a child and then give it away, I just know I couldn't.

That would be a tough job...think very, very carefully about it.

i have to agree with wooh. while i am pro-choice... for myself that's not a choice i could make. i know someone has to do the job and some may find it rewarding work but having been with a friend to an abortion clinic i was really weirded out and scared by the protesters as well. these patients don't get adequate counseling in most cases. it's not a pleasant thing to be around imho.

as far as future employers, you must proceed at your own risk. i would think it would be difficult to get some jobs following employment there such as on an l&d floor. while it would be against the law to turn you down for that reason only, having worked l&d myself i feel like the management would not want to hire you if another qualified applicant was available. imho

I couldn't have said it better myself. I totally agree.

I'm curious what made you apply for the job. What about it made it an option for you?

There's nothing wrong with going to an interview to find out more about a job. Ask about the job description, even ask to shadow a nurse for the day.

I doubt future employers would look down on you for this. If they do, do you really want to work for them anyways?
