Contacted Oprah Show About Nursing Issues

Hello everyone!

Yes, after visiting this website many, many times-I decided to e-mail the Oprah show to suggest a show about the issues in the nursing profession. No, I'm not a nurse yet-I start nursing school in the fall. I want to become a nurse so badly, but am scared to death after reading post after post after post about how horrible the working conditions are for nurses. It seems that nurses want to be heard, but nobody is listening. Some of the wages that nurses are getting paid and nurse-to-patient ratios are absolutely horrible for people who have patient's lives in their hands every day. Why not make some serious racket? Maybe all of you should contact the Oprah show too, which could possibly help raise a red flag. This is just an idea. What do you all think? Sorry if I sound naiive-I'm just trying to help.

After reading the article, this woman scares me. What if in her next show she will order her couch-bound followers to worship nurses? We'll have to make our way to work through mobs of 60 millions brainwashed individuals.

Scott Pelley did a fabulous presentation at the AORN Congresss this year in Orlando, and he usually never does these things! He loves nurses, and promised to give us some attention on 60 Minutes, so stay tuned in. Too bad it was copyrighted, or we could get a copy of the tape. It was extremely moving, and was a great tribute. Thanks, Scott!

GREAT IDEA!

I am in! Tell everyone you know do contact Oprah also! Try to be specific and address your major concerns....

Awesome!

Thanks for sharing!

I think a good start would be to have Laura Gesparis (?sp) on Oprah. I don't always agree with the things that Oprah does, but she is a big name and is able to carry on a converstation with some class. Have you ever heard Laura talk about nursing, she is funny yet accuarte. She has degrees out the wazoo and yet still works as a staff nurse, she knows what both ends are like. She is also not afraid of tuff topics. Did anyone see her on I think it was the Ted Coppell show. Go to Laura's web site and watch it.

Oprah will never do a show about nurses, she is all about teachers, moms, and africa, which not to bash her we all have our passions, those are hers

I believe one thing (among others) that will "get the word out" about us hard-working, life saving nurses is to get those darned TV shows to portray nurses correctly!

Like others have said, look at Grey's...ER...House... Great shows, I must admit... But man! Where is there a real portrayal of a nurse in any of em!

HOWEVER, I think YOU ALL need to go to http://www.nursingadvocacy.org and take a look around the site to see what it has to offer. Like in that issue of PARADE when nursing was listed under the "hot jobs, NO COLLEGE DEGREE REQUIRED." This website addresses this issue and offers a way for nurses to respond.

This website offers many ways for us to advocate for our profession...For the future of nurses.

While getting Oprah to do a show might work, who knows...I think if these big hit medical TV shows could just make a few changes in the way they depict us, the public will be more aware. Then maybe it would go from there? Heck, I don't know...But worth a shot! Maybe we all DO just need to join and conform an enormous rally! Hmm...Kinda sounds fun, eh? :)

Anyways, just check out that site

Take a look at it! It won't hurt ;)

She always says she loves teachers and nurses--- maybe she'll do it--- great idea!!!!

I hope you get a response I have emailed her about nursing issues as well, and never rec'd a response. I am sure she gets tons. It just needs to catch someone eyes. Good Luck!!

Maybe we should all get busy and send her an email. What is her email address?

have done this several imes as well as other talk shows and the white house with no visible results - good luck- be happy to help ya if they ever do answer.

I think we need someone to write a sample letter that we can mass email the show lol.

when i had written i had recently seen a article about an investigation where they set up a fake medical record and the undercover went in as a patient to the nursing home and took notes ( pretended to be alzhiemers - to funny - the place was shut down if i recall ) anyhow- they had hidden camera in luggage the whole bit so i told several hosts about it and noone ever rresponded and as far as i know never tried it - i can name 2 in past few yrs i worked for would be shut down in a few days if anyone went undercover and saw the way we had to treat people - matter of fact one is due to state finally doing something - not alolowed to admit anyone else from what i hear-
