I was on MSN today and there was an article about jobs for $30+ an hour. I read it to see what was there and RN's were listed as making $34/hour.

I have not seen anywhere near that for RN's except if you live in Boston, San Diego, New York City etc.

They also included airplane mechanics making $30+/hour. My husband is/was one and he looked for employment for 6 months all over the US after being laid off when the economy tanked and the best he could find was $17/hour. Not sure where they are getting these numbers?!?

Depending where the jobs listed are I don't see where those numbers are out of line. In some areas they would even be considered low.

I remember a workplace (before healthcare) where I was making something like $8/hr. They tried to tell us that we were really making something like $20/hr once they added in their contributions to our benefits. (The benefits weren't THAT good, and some of the numbers were really dodgy. Like the taxes that were deducted from our $8/hr were added on top of the $8/hr.)

Anyway, when I see how much I "can" earn according to the ads on the side of Facebook and on the tv and such, I generally assume that kind of manipulation is going on with the numbers.

But nurses are considered well paid in some circles. My husband's coworkers think he has a sugar momma being married to a nurse. He and his coworker that's also married to a nurse are the envy of the entire place. :rolleyes:

I live in SW Pennsylvania and I make just under $30/hr. But I have 9 years experience and I'm stand-by (though I do have a regular schedule) and don't get benefits. Maybe they're factoring in agency nurse pay scales? They make very good money. I don't know....$34/hr doesn't sound all that off to me.

I live in Phoenix and work at one of the local hospitals. I make base pay of a little over $34.00 and hour plus night shift and W/E diffs. I have been a nurse a LONG time though!

It depends on where you live and your experience but I agree those $30.00 jobs maybe psoted but no one's hiring to them.....

I've been a nurse a little over a year and I make $30/hr working hospice.

NY area easily its that or higher. In 2004, an RN with 5 years + experience was making 68,000 which is about 34/hour, that is without shift differential. SIL is currently per diem and makes 42/hour. No benefits, but steady work.
