a question about employment history

can a potential employer search your rn employment history by your rn license #?

in other words, if you had a brief employment encounter somewhere that you'd rather forget about, is it accessible, regardless, to an employer via your license#?

Not that I know of. An employer can check with the state to see if your license is active, maybe even to see if there have ever been any actions against you, but it's up to you to list former employers on your application or CV.

With computer technology today, I am sure there are sites somewhere that any type of information is available for a price, but the other poster is correct, unless you name the employer the new facility has no real way of checking your work history. I am more than a little sure many posters have a period of short employment in their past. Many chose to leave those unlisted, others list everything. In the end, it depends on you and the chance you take if you are ever found out to have given a false statement.

No, but background check services can check your employment history by searching on your SSN. But these services are notoriously lax. If you had a short employment "error in judgement", don't worry about it. You'll be fine.

The Board does not track this. Employers find this info out through investigators and services that do employment investigations and it is done through the records of payments made to the govt regarding your pay.

Maybe if you are applying for a job with the FBI or the CIA, but not a regular employer.

The truth is, there are several internet based companies that do centralized verifications of employment, but the EMPLOYER must pay to be a member of these websites, via contract, they report information, and in turn, get to pull information back out.

However, usually only major, national employers are members.

Background investigations companies do not have access to more information than a regular business does. There no such magical database where you put in your SSN and everything about your life spills out.

Read the fine print on the background investigations consent form....if the AREA of search (credit, employment, criminal history, etc) is not on that form, then you HAVE NOT authorized it.

Employment information sometimes appears on your credit report. However, it is grossly inaccurate. I personally have 3 employers that I have never worked for that shows up on mine.

One point that I find particularily of concern is that prospective employers are pulling credit reports even though it is not related to your job function as a Nurse. These are not harmless inquiries. Every inquiry can lower your credit score by as much as 5 to 10 points. If you are in a full blown search and you get to the interview stage and they have you sign an agreement to a background search be sure and tell them specifically not to run a credit report until an offer has been made and you have accepted. My wife interviewed at five prospective employers and three of them ran credit reports. Our score dropped over 30 points as a result. We are protesting the inquiries with all 3 agencies and they will be deleted and our scores will go back up. Make sure it doesn't happen to you!

This is an excellent point. If they are not going to offer you a job, they have no business pulling it.
