Nurses General Nursing

Published

When I was a nursing student, back in the dinosaur age, it was absolutely VERBOTEN to wear perfume, cologne, scented after-shave, etc.

Fast forward to 2002. I have co-workers that come in smelling like they've been marinating overnight; there's one RT that is so bad I can't be anywhere near her...hard when you're trying to discuss pt care. I've been around nurses that were wearing patchouli, which is so strong, or musk, or Vanilla Fields. You can smell these people from 50yds.

This stuff just makes my migraines 1000% worse. Has anyone experienced this and had some sort of peaceful resolution?

I do NOT get why ANYONE in the medical profession would wear perfume or cologne in the pt. care areas, period. It should be forbidden by regulation or something. Some patients are so allergic that they actually react w/anaphylaxis! ( and we have to post signs on their doors and charts!!!!!). I don't know what a "peaceful" resolution would be except to forbid it period, for all healthcare workers, (to make it fair), for not only the sake of their coworkers, but patients whose lives may depend on us refraining from being so inconsiderate.

Talking to the offenders politely may be a start... I would try. But, I would not expect much. They obviously do not care how they affect other's sensitivities by wearing this stuff to begin with. (patchoulli? YUCK!!!).......:angryfire

I do not wear perfume, to work or everywhere elso. I am very allergic so some scents, sometimes those of my co-workers. Why is it considered rude to point this out? People have gotten offended with me - But I'm the one who has the right not to be wheezing!

On another note, some hair products can be very stinky and even though the person is not wearing purfume like me, they can be mistaken for doing so. Unscented products that work well ARE hard to find.

There is a time and a place for musk and other fragrances and aromas...........Work of as we do.......gee, we do such glamorous work, huh, folks.........is not the place for flirting, flattery and especially over the edge makeup and perfumery.........

leave that for our other lives.......

come on folks, we are nurses when we punch in......i can define my lives.....when at work I am.....when I am off......i am.....

when at work my focus is for the patient.........period. over, said and done.....................

oh, yes, i forget we work so much, we do not have time for other lives...........................

besides the fact that is "possibly" look and definitely smell professional.......come on folks, no matter where you work you will always have the respiratory patient that doesn't need the extra aggravation to breathe than by what we bring into the room....................

micro is out of here.....just chirpin' in.....chirp, chirp, chirp

I don't know whats worse, the fact that you quoted an ABBA song, or the fact that I know it's from an ABBA song

It's not ABBA, so you're safe. LOL!
