Geek Nurses, Front and Center!

Published

Introduce yourselves, if you would.

ME: Susan, was a programmer prior to returning to school to become a nurse, currently an LPN and GN, waiting to have my ASN conferred and take the NCLEX-RN.

I work in a rural CAH. Have a little better than a year in LTC and med/surg and hated the floor. I loved patients, had no patience with the paperwork and administration and scapegoating nonsense of the floor.

I really lucked into a great job. I can talk clinical, English, and geek interchangeably, and have managed to convince the nurses that I really am there to advocate for them. And I do.

Your turn!

Nobody? Just me?

C'mon, folks! It's lonely in here!

;)

ME:

Always have been a code monkey and exploit exploiter. :) Was assigned to Fort Meade for awhile in the military and got to play with all kinds of goodies. That led me to Information Systems Security. I do contract work for different entities involving network security (penetration, hardening, design, etc). I also code on my free time. I participate in a couple of open source projects and regularly contribute to FreeBSD as well.

I maintain a couple of websites purely for fun. I am a hard core Lord of the Rings Online junkie.

My Computer (my pride and joy): Dual AMD BE Phenom X4 9950s sitting on 16GB ram and 2TB of internal and 1TB external hd space with 3 ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2's and dual Westinghouse 25.5" monitors.

If the MPAA or RIAA ever found out my name, I'd be so broke the lawsuit wouldn't be paid off until 3215. :D

Only thing better than my computer is the smile I get from my multiple adopted grandparents at work. :)

Nerds? NERDSSS!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and Albert Einstein is my personal hero and the only celebrity I ever bothered to meet was Stephen Hawking.

Almost forgot... I am still a CNA (Working as Staffing Coordinator) but am still working on my ADN.

I am interested in informatics but don't really know anyone involved so I am hoping my little homebrew staffing/payroll/hr/patient charting/total nursing home software revolution will bust me in on my own steam.

If I play my cards right, I hope to get my RN and launch my own little start up at the same time.

"There are a few people that think by utilizing technology in healthcare you somehow diminish its caring nature, but that's not true. Technology is like any other tool. It should be utilized ethically and appropriately to improve patient care and healthcare practice. It will never replace the art of nursing, human kindness or wisdom. Someone once said, "No one likes change but a wet baby." That's also true when applied to changing the manual work processes of healthcare practitioners by implementing information systems technologies. You have not seen resistance until you have watched a grown man (with M.D. behind his name) try to destroy a laptop, mobile metal cart and all!"

Oh, am I feeling that this week! My nurse manager, also a super-user, doesn't want us to link diagnoses to the generation of anything automatic, except a nutritional consult. No care plans, nothing. Her reason, stated with her arms folded: "I can do that."

*sigh*

You stated my feelings about this field beautifully.

I'm thinking of the Excelsior MSN after I finish the bachelors. I should get into the program at Empire State for fall.

Hello all.

Me:

My name is Teri and I have been a lurker here at allnurses for a very long time. I saw this post and decided it was time to come out of the shadows.

I have been in informatics for a little over 5 years. I started out as a clinical analyst with another nurse that was part time. Now I am the IS Clinical Informatics Administrator and the only nurse in IS. Funny how the title has changed over time, but I still do the same basic job. Although with more responsibilty and a lot more knowledge.

I have a MSN and have been thinking about geting a certification in informatics. Was a certified pediatric nurse before going into IS.

I work in a Meditech shop. Our facility has had Meditech for over 10 years with NUR up for almost 11.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi. :typing

Hi,

I've been a RN since 1990 (18 yrs). Wow! can't believe its been that long. I have worked in Pediatrics my entire professional career, in numerous roles and settings. I started in IT 2 years ago. We are a Meditech shop with the full C/S suite. I got a BS in Information System roughly 5 years ago but remained employed as a Nurse.

I love the work I am doing and I feel fortunate to have this position. Although I miss taking care of patients. I don't miss any of the usual nonsense and games that sometimes comes with working on a hospital unit. I have no desire to go back. I' feel lucky to work in such a professional and dynamic atmosphere.

Yeah, I miss patients, too, but the rest of it? The thought sends me reaching for a Xanax.

Well, I don't work in IT, but have strong computer skills and am fascinated by the interface of nursing and technology. I love patient care, but am involved slightly with informatics. I am on a committee for my hospital that beta tests new apps, and suggests changes etc...It is a nice way to combine different aspects of nursing that I love.

You don't have to be in IT to be a geek.

:D
