I read an interestiing article, in the NYT, today. Apparently the first wave of gay boomers have begun to hit our LTC, Assisted Living, home health agencies. And more and more of them are being belittled, receiving less then quality care, being transfered to units that are not appropriate to them because of other residents. I am wondering, has anyone encountered this yet? What has happen? What is your attitidue? What is being done to correct the problems?

One would imagine so.
BTW the story about the men dressed as 1950's nuns taking the Sacrament did hit the local news. The Archbishop apologized in some way shape or form. For what exactly I do not know. I suspect that at the time he might have figured that Communicating the two would be less of a problem than not Communicating them. Then again he may have felt that they came to take the Sacrament with prayerful reverence despite their clothes. Who knows. The news reported that gentlemen in question are Catholics . They may therefore receive the Sacrament - but I don't know if being dressed in drag is an impediment to receiving Communion. They are members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence a groups of men that parody the Church. The Church has been around for two millennia. I suggest that two drag queens in San Francisco wont do Her that much harm.
love can't be defined by any human mind
love can't be grasped and fully understood
love isn't judged by right or wrong
love is gay and straight
love does not have strings attached
love is unconditional
love is an open interpretation
love is any type of family

people are just people, and real nurses treat all kinds of people, there is no definition of patient in their so called "pt care contracts" I read so much about. Everyone has a right to their beliefs, not my place to judge.Just be able to treat all of ur population of pts no matter who or what they are,and if u can not,it is time to find some other area to work in.

They've actually spread nationwide beyond just two. The Sisters have a chaper here in Tampa. They raise money for various chartities. My friends have gone to their Bingo night where 100 plus people show up and I hear it's a scream.
But seriously, if the Church has far serious problems.

I saw the tape as well. All I saw were two individuals, dressed as nuns, taking Holy Communion, with the respect and reverence that all of the other worshipers who received Communion as well. I hate to let the SPI in on something, but NYC had people dressing as nuns, soliciting alms, on the streets, long before they even thought of founding their order;). I think the Cardinal gave them Holy Communion because they appeared before him. He could have very well refused. We had a Cardinal, if I recall correctly, in Denver that refused to give Communion to a politician because of his stand on abortion. Cardinals, just as any other priest, can refuse to give Communion to anyone they deem not fulfilling the obligations necessary to receive this sacrament.
But this is not the issue. The issue is people who claim to believe in God and following his teaching, interpret them in their own way. They take the position that homosexuality is against the Laws of God. And anyone who is one and gives into his/her sexual urges, deserves to go to ****. And some go so far as to take their negative attitude out on the people they care for. They deny it and claim they are professionals and treat everyone the same. I hate to tell them this but one's dislike and hate of a life style seeps thru one's professional veneer. A good many people like to think they are very good at hiding their true feelings about one group or another. There are very few that are truly successful at hiding their feelings. Why do you think a patient will sometimes refuse to be care for by a nurse who is excellent and has a polished professional veneer? The patient can feel their hostility toward them, even thru that professional veneer. I dislike alcoholics. I refuse to take care of them not because of a dislike or lack of professionalism but because I know my dislike will be picked up by that patient.
I am not telling this because I want or need praise. I am telling it because I am a human being who realizes that we do not have that degree of professionalism necessary to hide our feelings. It just does not exist.

Perhaps another question needs addressing. Throughout history, there have been large numbers of women religious, the term used more often now for nuns. They have often served needy populations, and many of them have cared for people with HIV/AIDS. Many of them women have been nurses, some teachers, and a whole host of other caring professions. They have often served tirelessly, with little compensation, and have usually remained unknown.
Why do we find it amusing to mock these women? Would we find it so amusing if these men were dressed in burkhas? If they were dressed as Buddhist nuns? Why is it that Catholic women religious -- many of whom shared a profession with us -- are fair game for mockery?
I do not know if I have taken care of a gay person in LTC or not, they didn't have the nerve to admit it if they were. They do deserve the same treatment that anyone else receives. I do not think we will see very many of them in LTC, it seems to me that they die before they make it to that age. I guess this comes along the extravagant lifestyle that most gays live.
