GA Teen Contracted HIV from a hair weave? Really?!?!

I am not an ID specialist but an educated person and licensed nurse. This GA teen insists she is a virgin (though I know teens that only consider lady partsl intercourse as losing virginity, oral & anal sexual acts "don't count") and never used IV drugs. She's insistent she contracted HIV after the needle used to sew her weave to her hair "punctured her scalp leaving scabs".

Really? (Ok so this is from TMZ)

Georgia Teen Contracts HIV After Getting Weave At Salon |

According to the teeanager, while receiving the sew in weave, her scalp was was punchered several times with the needle, causing bleeding in the scalp which later became scab wounds. I didn't think nothing of it, it's happened before whenever I've gotten a sew in” says the teenager. Three weeks after getting the sew in weave, the teenager began to experience flu-like symptoms accompanied with aching muscles and rash. The girl entered the emergency room one night where several test were performed and questions were asked. She was released from the hospital. A week later, her mother received a call from a nurse urging them to come back to the hospital. I was in disbelief. Total shock. I kept saying how can I have AIDS when I'm a virgin. That's when the nurses asked me several questions and thats how I remember being wounded with the weave needle” recalls the teen.
Sounds like someone was 'fooling around' on second or third base with a guy and has some explaining to do!

HIV from a large, relatively dull tapestry needle I've seen used on weaves and braids? YEAH, NO.

I feel like 2nd base means something completely different these days.

I thought it meant "above the waist".

I'm guessing she had oral sex and just doesn't want to admit that to her mom.

It's still incredibly difficult and rare to contract HIV via oral sex. One of the ID physicians I have worked with has said the risk is "theoretical." I think the most likely scenario is a) she has had lady partsl sex and is lying about it (which just kind of is another reason to do away with the whole notion that virginity should be prized and that once you've "lost" it you're the equivalent of a used piece of gum or whatever stupid metaphor they're using these days), OR has had anal sex and doesn't consider that to qualify her for non-virgin status. Either way, what a bummer. Poor kid.

The braids are sewn in to last longer. It's common unless a weave or fall for a single day or two

The braids aren't sewn in. The actual extensions are sewn onto the braids (which are in a corn row style) with a curved needle and thread.

I've seen it done (accompanied a friend as its not a quick process) but you definitely explain it much better than I did

I must admit I know nothing about weaves but I have seen them fly off during club fights in my college days.

HIV is very unlikely in this scenario, as another poster said I could MAYBE see hepatitis occurring.

This girl is clearly lying and she has someone very angry doing her hair if she thinks a bloody head is normal. It is not normal to have scabs and puncture wounds. The needle used isn't even sharp. So unless the person is deliberately stabbing her head and applying pressure to draw blood I don't even see how hepatitis possible. That means you are drawing blood on multiple clients...scary

You're probably right. And I agree with your "poor kid" sentiment.

Yeah, I don't think it could happen with a weave needle. It can happen with a medical needle only because it's hollow and can protect the contained blood from the outside environment. But a weave needle? Not likely...

isn't the risk from a needle stick involving a known positive to be like, 0.3%? That would make this nearly impossible, if not completely impossible.
