GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

took me all day, 9 am till now, and i'm so ocd at writing that i hate it- haven't even eaten, just some coffee and couple swallers of coke all day. that trout above is makin me hungry!! :0)

i'm also working on a 'reply' submission of the letter to the publisher of beacon media

(he said it was 'great but too long to print' :spbox:), i have to cut it back to 350 words max first.

I read S. Cooper's opinion posted above very carefully, and I have come to the conclusion that this is blatant fearmongering.

She completely fails to mention the accrettitations EC holds. High standards MUST be met in order to obtain and keep these acrettitations. She mentions three incidents. How many students have graduated from EC and are providing safe, and competent care?

I could come up with many, many more documented examples about graduates of traditional nsg programs making serious clinical errors; even worse than what she mentioned. Are we to conclude, then, that these traditional programs are substandard as well? Following her reasoning, I would have to say yes.

The school claims their students need no clinical training because the students have experience as Emergency Medical Technicians, Respiratory Technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Military Corpsman or other in "clinically oriented health care fields."

This Lady needs to do her homework about Excelsiors Students before she writes a fraudlent article. I am a PARAMEDIC, and am a very happily employed RN in a Critical Care environment. She needs to solve Georgias RN shortage in a more positive manner than bash the very people she represents. I am sorry to you courageous Georgia Excelsior Nursing students who have to fight such an uphill battle.

Counterpoints in all letters to the editor need to include:

a. Excelsiors progran in existance 30 years. GA recognized it's graduates until 2008

Program did not significantly change, course work strengthened.

b. Program named NLN School of excellence (date)

c. NLN accredication arm is same group that schools of nursing in GA seek accrediation under to promote highest educational standards.

d. NCLEX pass rate of school.

e. Fact that there is a failure rate on CPNE attests to rigourous standards. HESI exit exam used by some schools (don't pass can't graduate).....

Keep any article to around 500 words if hope to get published, and don't loose legislators attention.

Short, facutal pieces......

Those that are GA RN grads offer to have reporter shadow you at work...

Another thought -- is this the first time anyone opposing EC has trotted out EC grads who have had alleged patient safety issues? I don't recall hearing of any documented issues until Ms. Cooper wrote her opinion piece. I'm just sayin'.

Does anyone have a link to the HB Sharon Cooper is sponsoring? Thanks

Here you go

Ok. I read the bill. It looks like they will license EC grads by a waiver petition until July, 1, 2010, then severe restrictions will be placed on EC grads; i.e. the only way they can endorse in is with two plus years of RN experience and graduation of an approved program for LPNs only. Am I interpreting this correctly? Thanks

Also, does anyone know when HB 475 will be voted on? Thanks

Hey Godsmacked, Go to the license verification page on the BON web-site https://secure.sos.state.ga.us/myverification/ and type in your name to check your status. I looked and my License number is posted, it has actually happened. I just needed to see it with my own eyes....and I just did.

HI there,

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!

Can you send me a note with your name....and ID# if you know it...we want to

let the staff know about your license...

Congratulations again, and thank you for sticking it out with us!

Pauliegirl

Has anyone found out when they will approve applications again?? Hopefully this won't take months. I have seen my name listed and it says pending, so hopefully soon they will accept some more.
